I was wondering if there was anyone out there who has had gastric bypass surgery and is an avid DisneyWorld fan? This will be my first trip since my gbs surgery and I am a little apprehensive.
Any suggestions would help. I have to consume 1/2 a cup of food every 2 to 3 hours and it should be low fat, no sugar and include as much protein as possible. Help!

I don't know how much help I will be to you because I also had GSB but haven't been to Disney since. I'm planning on carrying some of the protein bars that I like to fill in for my protein but I'm sure I will waste money on meals, especially the buffets that we are going to. I'm sure they won't let me get away with the childrens' prices. I do have one of those cards from my doc that says I am limited on what I can consume but we'll see.

Good luck...I'm going before you so I will post when I get back on how much luck I have.

You may want to visit our WISH Board here on the DIS for further information. It is a marvelous support group for those WDW lovers who are dieting or maintaining a weight loss. Good luck! :)

how long after surgery are you visiting WDW? you shouldn't be grazing all day if you are more than 3 months out. Eating meals every 2 to 3 hours for long term post op is not generally accepted protocol for gastric bypass. Be excited you are losing weight and don't worry about wasting food. It will become a fact of life with GBS. if you have a fridge in your room. Pocket a piece of string cheese for a mid morning snack. Eat the grilled chicken sans bun from a chicken sandwich. Split an adult meal (usually much healthier) with a kid if you are travelling with a kid and throw the rest away! As soon as you feel full push the plate away. It's now a joke with me and my friends. I love desserts and don't mind paying for just a bite or two. As soon as I have had my few bites I ask one of my friends to throw it away. It so much easier when someone else does it. I enjoyed a Dole Whip this way. Two or three bites and in the trash it went. You can always substitute carrot sticks for fries at most counter service restaurants.

I am not a fan of the turkey legs sold at the carts but they are good sources of protein and are sold for less than $5.

There are lots of good tips for post op patients eating out at www.obesityhelp.com

Thanks for all replies!
Princess674, my surgery was on July 18, 2003. I had surgery at the Wish Center in Chicago. I am to eat 6 times a day. 3 meals and 3 snacks, none of which should be more than a 1/2 cup of food per meal or snack. I should continue to eat this way until my 1 year appointment. I have lost 77 pounds so far!! After reviewing some WDW menus, it looks like I should get by with no problem! Thanks for your help.

I was a little concerned when you said you should be eating every two hours but when you put it in terms of 3 meals and three snacks it sounds more what I am used to. If ever you don't see something on the menu that seems right ask them to modify it for you in a restaurant. (ie, leave the tempting starch off your plate and replace with a healthy steamed veggie) which is just good dieting practice regardless of GBS. Counter service is the hardest but as long as you choose the "better" counter service (not burger stands) you should be able to find a low carb, high protein meal.

We had a car, and kept a small ice chest in the car where I kept snacks that were good for everyone (including me). Try the new Krave bars, they are high in protein and taste yummy. They will melt if it is hot but are great to keep in the room for an evening snack!

dont forget WATER! WATER! WATER!
