Eating and no power

Luckily when we lose power we have a gas stove with electric start. Even thought the electricity is out we can still light it with a match. We did that during the last ice storm and cooked on the stovetop. I just ran to the store again and got more stuff, soups, ramen and instant coffee packs that i can use with boiled water. It is already starting to ice here. Last time we had no power from Thursday till Tues. yuck!! Be safe everyone!!!!!!!!!!

We've been w/out power for 2 weeks after a hurricane. Around here there's no worry about the cold though because it is HOT when these things strike. We do have a gas stove and we have a generator that runs our house. Pre generator, we'd eat sandwiches(yuck) and grill.
I'd say if there is something you want to save, bury it in the snow.

Good luck to all of you! Hoping the storm won't be as bad as the forecasts are predicting. We've had some doom and gloom hurricane forecasts and they'd turn out to be way overblown.

Growing up in Michigan where power outages in the dead of winter are an expectation, the thought of not having gas heating and a gas stove has never really crossed my mind before...if worst came to worst, I know a bunch of folks with generators.

We have a generator now, so this isn't a problem anymore. But, I used to cook a turkey breast right before a storm, so we'd always have leftovers for sandwiches, etc.

Wow, the store was CRAZY but I was able to get a gas grill so I will be able to grill out if we need to!

I could not believe the amount of people out stocking up! I guess I should feel lucky I did not have to shop for a lot of grocery items during this mess.

Now that I am prepared....it will only rain so I think I just kept everyone around me safe from the winter storm!

Just trying to prepare myself for what may happen, but most likely won't! What do you eat when you have days without power? Do you have a propane camp stove, heat over the kerosene heater/fireplace?

We keep an old small charcol bbq and a couple bags of charcol in the garage for an emergency like this!

We also have a gas fireplace that looks like a woodstove, and I have found in the past (we had a 5 day power outage a couple years ago), that I can put a pan of water or soup on top of that fireplace and it will eventually get warm enough to have warm food (soup, tea, instant oatmeal)

Beyond that: cereal, sandwiches, crackers and cheese, canned food (you need a manual can opener), things cooked on the the bbq like burgers, hotdogs, steak.

Usually if our power goes out, it's not a widespread thing and we just end up going to a nearby restaurant.

edited to add: If you are worried that the power might go out, don't forget water, both for drinking and for flushing the toilet (I fill empy kitty litter jugs with water for toilet flushing...if you have a well with an electric pump, you wont' havge water in a power outage...pouring water in the bowl will force it to flush(.

Also: HAnd sanitizer. If you are without the ability to use your water, you'll still want to wash your hands.

That sounds great. Not sure how frequently you lose power, but you can get a 2 kilowatt generator for I think around $500, that is basically enough power to run most things in the house (as long as you aren't running things at the same time.) I have thought about getting one, but we don't lose power often enough really, its usually only once about a year or so and its usually due to someone crashing into a pole.

I'm glad you were able to get a grill. Is the grill gas tank full? ;)

I have to stop into the store this afternoon to get ingredients for my DH's birthday cheesecake and I'm a little scared.

I just went to the grocery store and was shocked at all the people shopping. I couldn't tell if they were stocking up for the upcoming snow or if they were getting ready for Super Bowl.

In 2009 we were out of power for 15 days due to an ice storm. We ate sandwiches and grilled mostly. Showering was our biggest problem seeing as we have well water. Anything we needed to keep cold we just stuck outside. Once towns started getting power back we could go get something from it. Our power went out about 3 times a week for a good three months after the ice left because of falling tree limbs.

Just in case I making hard boiled eggs and baking the chicken in freezer. Worst case scenario I am a little prepared for additional sandwich fixings; best case I am ahead of the game for dinner tomorrow.

Usually its not widespread if its a power outage here and last time we just went and checked into a hotel for 2 days until it was back on. During one of the last hurricanes it was nicer weather so we just bbq'd sometimes and other days drove a few miles to where it wasn't out and ate in a restaurant.
