We have a brood going next September. The brood will need a GV - unless - one of the brood who is always a late cancel fails to show - at which point only a 2BR is needed!

I have 150 points per year + 30 Points banked. Use year = December.

The GV at OKW will cost me: 5 Nights X 36 Points = 180 points.

The 2 BR costs me 5 X 22 = 110 Points.

Question:

If I get the GV then part of the brood cancels - what happens to the points.

Thanks.

I fyou cancel before your 30 day deadline - the points just go back into your account as normal points with all the same dealines, etc. If you are within the 30 day mark from your check in date - the extra points will go into a holding account. They are stil useable - they just ahve more restrictions placed on them. The big restriction is that for a DVC property reservation, you cannot make a reservation more than 60 days prior to your new check in date. There are other restrictions regarding all the other trades you can make - I'm not very familiar with those. Hope that helps...

with your use year in Dec and this reservation in Sept.

I won't chance it - make the 2-bedroom reservations. If he decided to come just get a studio.

Thanks for the info! We love the idea of the GV. The other thing is that if we do go - we wanted everyone to be together.

But - 70 points is 70 points! That could give me my wife and kids a nice 3 or 4 day getaway!

After talking to my wife - I think we may just reserve the GV - then - tell him he has a deadline of July 1st to commit 100%. If he does not commit - then - he may be left out.

This would give us ample time to either use or rent the remaining points. And, if he decides at the last minute he wants to come - then - we get him a studio.

Make sense?

Keep in mind there's the possibility there may not be availability for a 2 bedroom if you decide to switch in July. Or a studio at the last minute. If you haven't already reserved the GV, there's also the possibility they may be unavailable at this point.

Very good point - we also discussed this. We may just try and get the GV at the 7 month mark. Then, if we can not do the switch in July we will keep the GV.

Here is the kicker: I have 650,000 Frequent Flier miles. I am more then welcome to fly him and his kid down from Ohio for free - but - he is afraid of flying!

We are thinking of just buying him and his boy free tickets as a guilt trip not to cancel!

It's not clear what you mean by "100% commit." If that means he's paying for his own lodging, and should commit and pay you by then, that's one situation. If YOU are providing the lodging, that's a different situation.

Either way, I'd give him a drop-dead date and if he's not in by then, he's on his own. If you are taking a lot of people, your primary responsibility is to plan the event for the GROUP. You have more than enough to do without fretting over the idiosyncracies of one person. There IS a point where his problems become HIS problems.

I'd be very tempted to refer him to the Rent/Trade board and let him make his own arrangements. I'd rather have HIM rent points to go to Disney than me HAVE to rent points because he cancelled and put me in the trick bag.

Extremely great point. I think we want him to go more for his son - who would really enjoy it. And, it is a family vacation - this is one of the thoughts when we originally bought - to have family gatherings.

But, you are 100% correct - we can want him to go - but not make him go.

I reserved a GV at OKW for my November trip, thinking at the time that there might be 9 of us (all adults/all women). Ended up we only had 6 but we kept the GV anyway and were SOOOOO happy with having some extra space (and 4 bathrooms!)! It was a real treat (and I have a very small contract so it isn't that I had points to fritter away...but it was worth it!) So my vote would be to go with the GV if you can get it! It was fabulous!!!
