Early entry into the parks during holidays, but not EMH?

I was reading the UG and noticed it said that SOMETIMES, during the holidays, the parks will open 1/2 hour early or more, but that it is not considered EMH. Do they open the WHOLE park, or only certain rides?

Do they announce this? If so, how far in advance? Do they tell you WHICH park will be opening early?

I know I am VERY early planning on which days I am going to which parks for our Thanksgiving trip, but I'm a control freak that way. The more info I have the better I can plan.

With the advent of early EMH, there is less tendency for the CM's to open a park early, however...

If you use the following method, you will never be late for any early-open possibility.

Always go to any WDW theme-park early enough to be at the gate by 30 minutes before the opening time (that's for EMH or regular time).

They will usually open the gates early, even if they only allow you to go through to the next "holding area" for a "rope-drop" ceremony.

No, if they decide to open a park early, its not announced ahead of time.
Certain rides may or may not be open.
