EARLY CHECK IN: December 15th, 2007 - Seven night Western - 12/15/07

I hope all of the ice stops for everyone and it clears up to leave!
We woke up to 4 or 5 inches of snow. Brad just called and said that the traffic is really moving slowly. A freight train derailed and is blocking the light rail track. He takes the light rail to work. They told everyone to go to a different station to park, but he is afraid all of the parking spots will be gone.

Cristi--When do you guys fly out, Friday? Maybe it's a sign to Brad that he should stay home and pack. Did you have a good supper?

I feel a little better, I checked a couple travel sites and there are all kinds of flights that leave DSM for Orlando on Friday, as late as Friday evening. I just want to avoid flying in Saturday if at all possible. Hopefully they can get it cleaned up by Thursday PM. We're nearing 1" of ice, lots of power outages in the area but so far we're good.

We fly out Friday morning. It is supposed to keep snowing off and on today, but be sunny tomorrow and Thursday then a slight chance of snow on Friday. If it is going to snow on Friday I am hoping it waits until about noon. We should be long gone by then.

Brad did ask me this morning to tell him what I needed for him to do to help pack. :)

Dinner was really good last night! Then we came home and I fell asleep on the couch at 9pm. :)

Patty--I'm counting on you to come online and tell me that it isn't going to rain ice forever. I hope you're warm and safe.

We got about a 1/2" of ice over night. We're supposed to continue to have freezing rain most of the day. Des Moines, which is 45 minutes north west, where were flying out of, is supposed to get snow this afternoon on top of the ice they already have.

.

Stacie - What came in last night hit the north side of the metro area worse. It's not to bad down here on the southwest side. I'm watching the news right now and they say the worst is yet to come. Though temps are hovering right at 32 cold air is moving in and the heavier freezing rain is just starting to move in. Real heavy near Emporia (70 mile SW of here). After the freezing rain, were supposed to get sleet, followed by a little snow with the storm ending around midnight. Supposed to clear up here on Thurday and stay dry till Saturday. No school tonight and probably will be canceled on Wednesday.

Hopefully this next round of ice won't hit you and you can get out on Thursday. No flights out of KCI this morning. They cancelled flights last night so the planes wouldn't sit overnight gathering ice. I'm glad were not flying out till Friday - better chance of flights back on schedule.

Stay warm

You all stay safe with that ice!

Our ice here hasn't melted much yet. Last night I was out with a coal shovel breaking the ice in the driveway as while the roads and sidewalks got like 1/2" to 1"...the driveway had 2"+ in most spots. Shaun has today off so he gets to finish the driveway.

It is suppose to snow a decent amount Thursday Night, but I think Logan should have everything fixed by 11AM Friday.

You all be safe and stay warm! In 5 days we will be on a cruise ship in nice 70 degree weather!

Hey Patty--Glad to hear that you escaped round 1. After today it's supposed to be fine here.

Cristi--Glad that you had a good birthday, and that Brad is asking what needs done. He must of got your hint the other day.

Melissa--I didn't realize you guys had ice too. Nothing like a little winter weather to put you into a cruise mood.

Patty and Susan--I need your statroom numbers so I can put you on the list for the gift exchange.

I got the ice cleared off the satelitte dish so the TV is back on. I'm off to start more :laundy: and give Andy a bath.

Hi Stacie ~ our room is 6051.

This is our local forecast. Very similar to Florida, I think...

Tuesday
High: 80°, Low: 55°

Mostly sunny and very warm once again. Highs in the upper 70s-lower 80s. Record warmth will likely once again be experienced again today.

Wind: SW, 5-10 mph
Mostly Cloudy

Wednesday
High: 77°, Low: 53°

Partly cloudy, breezy and warm. Highs in the upper 70s-80. Another round of record breaking heat expected again today. This should be the last day of record warmth as a cold front should move in Thursday and bring a great chill back to the area for the weekend. If all works out as we think, there should be a bit of rain too.

Wind: SW, 10-15 mph
Mostly Cloudy

Thursday
High: 70°, Low: 50°

Mostly cloudy skies with perhaps a shower.

Wind: SW, 10-15 mph
Partly Cloudy

Friday
High: 59°, Low: 35°

Mostly sunny and cooler.

Wind: NW, 5-10 mph
Mostly Cloudy

Saturday
High: 45°, Low: 35°

Mostly cloudy with light rain.

Wind: NE, 10 mph

We're beginning our drive on Thursday morning before the temps drop to a frigid 59.

Sending pixiedust: that all the snow and ice melts away so that no flights will be delayed or canceled.

Thanks for the room numbers, another item crossed off my list :)

I'm am officially packed!!! :) I didn't even have to unzip the expander on the suitcase, and yes I remembered pants. :) Andy is really close, the last of his is in the dryer.

The rain/sleet has stopped for now  We only lost power for around an hour this morning and it was during Andy's nap. We're supposed to get some snow yet this afternoon and then be done. Thank goodness there is no wind or there would be way more problems.

Here are some pics of the ice:

I don't know if you can see it but the power lines go through the middle of this picture:

DD made her little brother go sledding with her because her big brother is still being a poo-poo head:

Wow, Stacie and the other snow- and ice-bound people - I've never heard some of the weather terms you've been trading back and forth - snow showers? light wintry mix? Hard for me to imagine.

I love the photo from the first post, the close-up of the twigs - you could turn that into a greeting card.

Andy looks so cute in the sled! Must be a bummer just learning to walk and then trying to navigate the snow in boots.

As for DS15, my teen DD always benefitted from some alone time - seems like she'd just get full up of the family in her face (her term - I'd call it love...) and would settle down once she got to escape us for a while. And the ship is such a great place for them to have some measure of independence. Melissa? Care to chime in, since you were a teen much more recently than us fogeys?

Stay safe, everyone! Glad to hear the storms are running their course. Just cross your fingers for them to start back up the day we disembark so we can spend some more time with the Mouse...

Ok, I know I'm pushing my luck with three posts in a row but I wanted to make sure that those of you who are staying at the Raddisson/Residence Inn at the port saw Shirley's post:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1658757

BIG WARNING if you are going to be here soon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you go into Ractrac which is the gas station between the Radisson and Residence Inn, PLEASE do NOT turn North when you leave the station. 126 tickets were given out in less than 10 days to the tune of over $126.00 each.
The sign that is posted by the road is very deceiving since you can go to the other side of the gas station and turn North for there is NO sign there saying you can not turn.
The police have been pulling everyone and anyone over.
Always
Shirley

OK, I'll leave you alone now.

I did a cruise when I was 14 to Alaska with my parents. It was a strange cruise at this is when my parents decided to get divorced...

I spent most of the time in the teen area away from them. Also, in one of the ports, I was bored and my parents were fighting so I just walked back to the port by myself - however this was Alaska, not the Caribbean so it was a different environment. I also became really close to two of the others in the teen club who were also in similar situations so we hung out there a lot.

At 16, I was basically on my own anyway. I had a car and a lot of activities with school, working 20/25 hours a week and a boyfriend so I was never home. On the weekends, my mother was often out of town with either work or the spa. So needless to say, I was very independent at that point in my life. My mother just provided a roof to sleep under. Luckily, a lot of 'issues' attitude wise were worked out once I went to college. Despite the attitude, I was a good kid grade wise and activities wise. I think for a lot of people - the attitude goes away around that time anyway.

I think on the ship - its a good controlled environment to give your children independence. There isn't too much for them to get in trouble with. My only rule on the ship was to be at the meals at dinner time.

Stacie, that is cute picture of Andy. looks like he is enjoying the ride

OK, my dear friends who have been letting me vent. I called the Med DR yesterday, he returned my call today. I told him how I was feeling. that I was going on a cruise, not packed & don't care if I get packed (I will at one point) He said this is always a bad time of year. I told this year it is worse. I told some other things that will be TMI. He is increasing one of my meds(he usaully dosen't do that when I go away) & wanted to see me as soon as I came home from the cruise. I told him I would be gone 2 weeks & that I had an app. to see him any way Jan 14. He said that would be alright.

Hopefully with the med change & the cruise I'll fell better.

On another note we are suppose to get freezing rain on Thursday:scared1: :scared1: . That is the day we are leaving. it is to start at the rush hour & our plane leaves at 8:00am:scared1:. another factor

Well I'm going to try & force my self to sleep. I have a ton of things to do, tommorrow.

The most important is Pack, Yes the pants are packed:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Oh, Sharon, I'm so glad that you were able to make contact with the doctor. Hopefully the medicine change will help, along with the sea air and a change of scenery. We're pulling for you...

Stacie...such a precious picture of Andy. I doubt John will ever see that much snow...unless we visit our Ohio friends in the winter.

Sharon...good for you for calling the doctor. :cheer2: I hope you feel better very soon. Maybe we can all help. I bet hugs from John and Andy would do you some good:grouphug:

Our bedroom is a disaster, but the packing is almost complete. Last cruise we had a guest room to stack everything. John took over that room and we dare not go in there while he is sleeping.

I hope the snow and ice doesn't interfere with travel plans. Our local news even talked about the weather in Kansas and Iowa.

Oh, Rachel's school friend is doing the 4 night Wonder. We might run into them at Disney though.

Good night my DIS friends.

I don't know about you guys, but I have a gut feeling we are going to be switched to an Eastern Port...I'm going to call Disney at 9am and talk to them to see if that is the case, as I guess I want to be informed...

Olga is right where our ship would be going.

I was a bit worried about this storm when it first started pulling together. Hopefully it'll pick up a bit of speed and move out of the way.
