Ear-drum shattering screaming by ToT guests throughout the entire ride.

This thread reminds me of the first time I rode ToT. It was a brand new ride and I, at the ripe old age of 12, wanted to show my older sister how much braver I was than her (she chickened out). Bad idea. Scream is not the word to describe what came out of me. My family thought I would pass out. It was a blood-curling "being murdered" kind of scream. Started at the first drop and didn't stop until the ride was over. I couldn't breathe. You can tell in the pics that everybody was looking at me and I looked like I was gonna die. After it was over the CM and the other guests kept asking if I was ok. I was inconsolable and it remains as the worst most horrifying disney experience I have ever had.

Not a lot makes me actually LOL, but this sure did! Sorry that it's at your expense.

I have successfully gotten them to stop several times by calling out poor behavior. All it takes is "really? Is that necessary?" Or " want to grow up a little" in my best mom/teacher voice.

They may have stopped that one time, but what about the next ride, and the next?

Nothing has changed except you have gotten old. I don't mean to insult you. It is not a personal attack -- it happens to all of us. We grow old and the world around us seems to have changed but it is US who have. Trust me. Evolution is very very slow. Human nature has not changed in the past 20 years. Perspective (yours) has. Try to relax and make light of the little things. You will live longer, I promise!

If you knew me, you would know your advice to relax is pretty hilarious. People who know me personally would say I'm next door to comatose. I don't think encouraging poor behavior is being relaxed. I think it's being irresponsible. You see, I actually care about my fellow man & want everyone to have a happy life. IMO, none of us should take that away from anyone else just so we can do exactly what we want when we want. Other people matter as much as we do.

We'll have to agree to disagree on a changing society. Human behavior most definitely has changed in recent generations. My sisters & I were easier on our children than our parents were on us. Their parents were even harder on them. I'm sure my DS will continue with tradition & be even easier on his kids. With each generation, kids are getting away with more. I'll be the first to admit I'm guilty of continuing the trend myself. My family isn't exactly unique in this. Every family I know has pretty much followed this pattern. We as a society got lucky that some parents a few generations ago did a really good job raising their kids. That means there are still plenty of good people out there who don't think it's all about them. Unfortunately, we also have those all about me people who negatively affect everyone except for themselves. Those people have started a bad precedent.

FWIW, I've been to WDW so many times people screaming or talking on rides doesn't bother me in the least. I don't need to hear the commentary. I know it by heart. They can actually make a ride we've done numerous times more entertaining by adding their own commentary. That doesn't mean I don't understand where other people are coming from. If I saw a little child finally build up the nerve to crawl on a ride & saw someone purposefully make that attraction more scary for the sake of being obnoxious, I would absolutely think that was wrong. How could anyone defend that? This immature behavior that seems to be fine with some people could cause this particular child to be too scared to ride any indoor rides for the rest of the trip. Add to that this could be the only trip this family is ever able to take to WDW. This poor behavior could ruin this family's trip of a lifetime. We share this world with others. We shouldn't feel free to negatively affect someone's vacation just so we can get our giggles & be as rude as we choose. We also shouldn't encourage others to behave that way. WDW is an amazing place, when you enjoy the rides as intended. Why mess up someone's trip by adding obnoxious behavior to the experience?

I've found a simple way to deal with teens or younger adults acting like fools. I take out my cell phone, turn to them, and snap a photo or two. They know they are being disruptive and now they feel like they just got caught and their faces are on camera. Usually problem ends immediately without saying a word.

When DS was little, we were going into the stretch room at the Haunted Mansion (DL). He was ok, a bit apprehensive about the dark, but was being held by me and was holding up..

Until a group of 20 or so teenage girls started screeching. All of them.

Which freaked him out.

So we had to leave, because he went hysterical. (about 22 months old) I didn't want to spend the ride trying to get him to stop crying (disturbing everyone else) so I missed my first ride on the HM.

It took me 2 days to convince him to go back in, and what do you know? No one screamed, he was fine and we loved the ride.

I hate rude people, and screaming at the top of your lungs for absolutely no reason is nothing but rude.

Everyone on our ride got to enjoy it without the screaming, so I see that as reson enough to keep calling them out. If more people called out poor behavior eventually they would stop doing it becuase it wouldn't be fun anymore if pepople were chewing them out for doing it on every ride. It continues because people just put up with it and don't say anything.

It doesn't. It's unfortunate that an adult can get so bent out of shape that a teenager is being rude and devaluing their experience that the only course of action the adult can some up with is to display the same type of selfish behavior as the person they are chastising.

How hard is it to spot these people in line before you get on the attraction? If there is no line, perfect, you won't mind waiting a bit until they move on.

If you want to avoid irresponsible behavior, avoid teenagers. If you want to deal with it in your own fashion, that's fine too, just understand you can't really complain about distractions if you're doing the same thing. Whether you want to admit it or not, it's really no different.

If you treat a child like a child, they will continue to act like a child. If your experience was that hindered, there are many more ways to approach the situation that could yield much better results.

Explain to a CM that they harmed your ride experience and would really appreciate being able to ride again, without them around. Confront the kids, possibly in front of their parents, and just explaining to them that what they did bothered you, or your kids and explain that they set examples for the younger kids, etc.

By stooping to their level, you're really just replying with a "Well, he did it first" which is just as juvenile as their behavior.

So it would have been better to let them continue to terrify the child next to me than to make one 2 second comment and have them stop? Everyone else on the ride seemed to apperciate me speaking up, given the aplause when they stopped screaming.

Why didn't you ask the CM if you could stick around and go through that scene again with the next group? If you're experience is ruined, ask a CM to help you out. Not to do anything to the teens, but I'm sure they would be willing to work with you. If nothing more, I'm sure you could have gotten fast passes.

HM was down every time we went, the only opportunity we got was our last day, our last ride before heading to the airport, so we had no time to ride again

Add me in to one of the ones who disagrees with you. I sometimes think that none of the folks going, "kids these days!" ever lived through the Eighties. You think this is the "me generations"? This generation which is demonstrably (as in check the stats!) less criminally inclined, more socially aware, and closer to their parents than ever before? This current crop of kids is one of the most socially conservative and least inclined to take risks that we've had in generations!

I'm embarrassed to say I remember doing all kinds of annoying obnoxious things as a teenager. I remember shrieking with my friends on public transit to the point where the bus driver had to come back and tell us to settle the heck down. And that didn't just happen once. I remember my friends and I hanging out a hotel window on a school trip throwing jellybeans at passersby, and giggling madly when they'd look around all annoyed. I remember shoplifting with my friends. I remember my friends getting drunk, and driving like fools. The things I did would absolutely horrify my own kids.

And kids getting away with more today? Goodness, it used to be that if a girl got molested at a party full of high school jocks, it was her fault for going there and getting drunk in the first place. The things high status teenagers used to get away with is mind-boggling!

I wonder if perhaps it is because as a society we're less harsh with our kids that the crime rate as a whole has been dropping steadily since the seventies and youth are in less trouble overall? After all, it's been shown many times in studies that authoritarian parents breed rebellious kids who are more likely to act out and misbehave. So if society's changing, it's changing for the better.

Actually these days people acting like fools usually film themselves. It's not that they act worse. I knew some worldclass jerks when I was a teen. But now they film it more and put it on youtube. Then you can mock them openly. Just desserts I say.

Next time I'm just going to say Loudly "Oh you are so mature." and do my best slow clap

Personally, I've never rode ToT because when my DW tried to get me to do it, I had like a panic attack and started crying while we were in queue (not obnoxiously, just silently crying and a little hyperventilating) and so obviously I chickened out of the ride. But I try to avoid screaming when I can, if I can hold it back, I do, since I don't want everyone else to be like, "Who is that crazy girl that is ruining our ride, how rude."

But that's the thing. I understand and feel responsible for making sure that I don't mess up the rides of others if I can help it. I'm 20 (19 when I went to Disney) and I just don't think it's right not to think of other people when riding.

Also, I work at an amusement park, so that might have something to do with it. But if someone was acting obnoxious for the sake of it, older or younger than me, I wouldn't hesitate to make a comment to them anymore than I hesitate in uniform (which isn't any hesitation at all) to tell a person that they aren't allowed to smoke there, or that they have to put on a shirt, or that if they cut in line again, I will have them thrown out of the park.

I disagree with the idea that I should have to arrange my ride around obnoxious people, or that anyone else should have to. If you want to act like an obnoxious jerk, you rearrange your ride around everyone else. You wait to ride alone. Don't ruin it for other people just because you can.

Thank you for standing up to the obnoxious. The whole point of acting that way IS to annoy others, so riding alone is just not going to cut it for them I think. It's no fun to scream through the entire ride if it doesn't make anyone mad, and that is what bothers me most about it I think. Their behavior is specifically designed to ruin the experience for others. I just don't think anyone has the right to do that.
