So I awake this morning with a pain in my ear (better than other places I guess).

I mention it to a co-workers who suggests ear candles???

You stick them in your ear and light them

Wouldn't my head look like a birthday cake?
Wouldn't it singe what is left of my hair?

Is it safe???

They're supposed to be safe. I know several people that love those things. I don't even want an open flame near my hair. I'd be bald.

Yup. Yankee Candle introduced the new Shrek Scent last May, where ya been?

No, I tried it with someone else and we almost lit the bed on fire. try it at your own risk!

Are we still talking ear candles?:scratchin

you take a thin paper plate and cut a small hole in the middle of it big enough for the ear candle to fit through. The plate acts as a catch-all for the stuff that falls off the ear candle.

You stick it in your ear and light it (best if you have help doing this) It creates a vaccuum to draw dirt/foreign objects/excess wax out of your ear and will help to rebalance the fluid level if you have a build up.

You let it burn until it's about 3/4 of the way gone or too close to your hair that it becomes a danger.

Now....the question is, can you resist cutting it open to see what came out You'll be sorry if you do! But you'll feel better afterwards!

You can find them at most health food stores/natural food stores.

Lol, I bought them at The Health Food store. The pressure that they created also hurt my ear. Yeah, they burned so fast and sparked that they burned a hole in the sheet.

I have read that they are just a scam too. Well, if they work for some people thats great.:sunny:

Ewwwwwww!

DH uses them often and loves them. (TMI to follow) He gets alot of build up in there, and it hurts and he can't hear as well, so I go to the Health Store and buy the candles and they work like a charm.

It's really not hard. He lays on the floor, you don't burn it close to your head (they're really long), put a damp washcloth on his face/hair just in case.

And yes, the proof that it worked is in the candle when you finish, if you're so bold ;)

You should give it a shot!

so if used, 1/2 the fun is seeing what get pulled up into them

A good friend of mine is quite the scientist. His DIL started working for a chiropracter and came across these. She brought them to the house. He did some little experiment with them to prove what a scam they are. I wish I could remember what he did to prove that they were a scam (he's not in the office today). If he is here tomorrow and the thread is still going, I will post it. But he ended up putting the candle is some other type of *thing* that was similar to an ear and it also produced that horrible gunk that everyone believes really comes out of their own ear.

but after having chronic ear infections for 3 years I haven't had a single one since i started candling and I was a skeptic to begin with.

Yes, some of what you see inside is the reaction between the beeswax and the heat. But hey, it works, and I'll keep on candling :teeth:

Why would you light Ear Candies. I would probably eat something called EAR CANDIES, I would never think to light them on fire and stick them in my ears!

What am I missing here?

Tony, it's a hollow wax tube that sticks out of your ear, lol!:sunny: It's a new agey thing. All I know is, it's a good idea to keep your fire extinguisher handy when you try it.:p

My friend uses them all the time. She says that they work and loves them.

This seemed like an interesting concept, so I decided to look it up.

This is what I found...

Why Candling Can't Work -
from http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/candling.html
Since wax is sticky, the negative pressure needed to pull wax from the canal would have to be so powerful that it would rupture the eardrum in the process. However, candling produces no vacuum. Researchers who measured the pressure during candling of ear models found that no negative pressure was created. The same investigators candled eight ears and found that no ear wax was removed and candle wax was actually deposited in some of them! [3]

Maybe the effects are only psychological or maybe this article is wrong?

Ear candles... who'da thunk?

You, lying comfortably on the couch. A close friend or relative leaning over you and sticking a 12 inch parafin/cloth cone in your ear. The gentle flickering of the flame....the smoke, the flame grows and grows and you feel light headed. The ash falls around you. You look like a very odd birthday cake.

Now, tell me you don't see the fun in that? :smooth:

And when you suffer chronic and debilitating ear infections and you find something that works, you stick with it! Pardon me, while I go light one up :p
