Hi

My husband, my daughter and I are deaf. We have a hearing son who have a Dyspraxia.

My son was going to have a brace last Friday. But he refused it and hospital densist told us to come back within one year. I was very shocking and didn't think how hard for my son to refused it.

I am looking for anyone with deaf people who have a dyspraxia child.

Please contact me and I want to share with the problem.

thank you

Ok, I'm still a student (although completing grad classes) but I'm confused.

What I think you are saying is that your son has dyspraxia of his speech? (otherwise known as childhood apraxia of speech)

Who suggested putting a brace on him? and where? What are they saying it would accomplish (I haven't heard of such things for speech)?

The current treatment (in the states) for childhood apraxia of speech is intensive speech therapy.

Additionally, if it is true childhood apraxia of speech, it is not because the rest of the family is deaf or hard of hearing- that I am sure of (currently taking a class in this).

Best of luck!

I am a speech pathologist and have worked with apraxia of speech in school aged children and I had a great experience working with a deaf mom of a hearing child. If you are a signer, my first advice would be to have an interpreter with you because even those of us who sign a little are not qualified to express everything you need to know or to answer questions completely.

It sounds like maybe your child was going to get braces for ortodontics? If that is the case orthodontics can help to position the teeth in a good spot to make sounds, but speech therapy should be ongoing.

Please send me a PM if I can help with specifics.

Now I feel dumb. My dad is a dentist and I couldn't figure it out :rotfl2:

I think grad school has made me stupider :rolleyes1
