DxDDP for young family of 4 - Tons of Food Pics - UPDATED *12/17!* Whispering Canyon

I agree. I think the character meals are, in general, not worth the cash. Go see the characters in the parks and use the money for a yummy dinner elsewhere!

IMHO... the food at character meals might not be worth the cash... but letting the characters come to the kids at meal time, instead of wasting hours of park time lined up for characters.... priceless.

Well, I can’t believe we are at the last meal of our trip! For this lunch, we choose the Whispering Canyon Café. There were a couple of reasons for this. First, we have never been to the Wilderness Lodge and I really wanted to see it! I thought I would like it, and I was right, it is beautiful! Second, I thought DH & the kids would enjoy the antics.

When we ordered our drinks, I told the waiter that DH was very thirsty. I knew what this would likely mean… and here it was…

DH was a little embarrassed but it was so funny. This is a good thing for the waiter, actually, though, because DH usually has his drink refilled at least 3-4 times while we eat. So, it saved him some trouble.

Next they brought out the Fresh Baked Cornbread and the Creamy Coleslaw first. The cornbread was really good. I am not a huge coleslaw fan so I skipped it, I think we all did, actually.

Then we got our appetizers. DH selected the Western Chips and Dip - Homemade Corn Torilla Chips with a bowl of freshly made salsa and queso dip

This was really good. Better than standard chips and dip, we ate most of it!
I chose the Barbecue Pork Spring Rolls - Barbecue Pulled Pork, Cheddar, Herbs, and Barbecue-Mayonnaise Dipping Sauce

I thought this sounded crazy but I had to try it. I am so glad I did, this was amazing! I loved it! If I could order these for an entrée I definitely would. Very good, I would certainly recommend people trying these! I especially loved the sauce, even more than what came with my meal, I wish I had kept it for my entrée!

For our main dishes we choose the Canyon Skillet - Smoked Pork Ribs, Oven-roasted Chicken, and Pork Sausage served with Cowboy Beans, Corn on the Cob, Creamy Coleslaw, Mashed Potatoes, and Fresh-baked Cornbread

All of the meat was great, we really enjoyed it. The potatoes were wonderful as well. The corn was pretty good. Neither of us cared for the Cowboy Beans at all, they just had a strange flavor for us.

The kids got something similar, Canyon Skillet - choice of chicken or ribs with mashed potatoes and corn on the cob. My kids chose the chicken and we also got 2 fruit cups with it for the appetizer and dessert.

They both loved this, especially the potatoes! They ate almost all of it.

Around this time they had some activities for that kids, like riding around the restaurant on the play horses. Our kids really enjoyed this.

We were so full that we didn’t even really want dessert! But, it was included, and I wasn’t going to waste our last dessert! So, we ordered them.

I picked the Chocolate Cake with Raspberry Sauce. On the side it had vanilla bean ice cream with chocolate chips. From the menu/reciept it looks like this was called Kahlua-flavored Chocolate Cake - Served with chocolate mousse filling and fudge icing

I really loved this, it had a great flavor and I LOVE chocolate, so it was a winner. I gave the ice cream to the kids and they ate it up.

DH had the S'more Cheesecake - NY style cheesecake on a graham cracker crust topped with chocolate ganache and marshmallows.

Dh said this was really great. He loves cheese case and smores so this was perfect for him. He said he would definiltely order it again.

COST BREAKDOWN:

Under normal circumstances, I would not pay almost $100 for this meal. It was good but not that good. But on the dining plan, it seemed like a decent use for a credit.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:
We really enjoyed our meal here and definitely would return. It isn’t in our top 5 or anything, but it was a great meal and something we would have again when we are in the mood for some Disney BBQ!

Yum!! The cheesecake and skillet looks delicious! Can't wait to try it!

For dinner on our last night, we choose to dine at Cape May Clam Bake. I guess I should rephrase that, my husband chose to dine here. It is one of his “must-do’s” when we come to Disney World, where as I could take it or leave it. The kids also like it, because they have large sheets of paper on the table tops and you can draw on it. So, something a little different for them. It’s always good but not great. This time was actually not as good as usual for me.

We started with a bowl of clam chowder.

I love clam chowder, this was the first time I’ve had it here, and it was very good. I enjoyed it a lot.

This is my first plate

Starting at the top and going clockwise there is Sauteed Green Beans, Roll, Seafood Pot Pie, Hand-carved Roast Pork Loin & Flank Steak, Basil Mashed Potatoes, a Barbeque Pork Rib, and Mac & Cheese.
The Pork and Steak for me was actually not edible. I could not even chew it. I let that go, because I did get the first slice off of both of the brand new pork and beef slabs they brought out, so I thought maybe I just got a bad piece, but still, it was not up to the standards there. The Basil Mashed Potatoes were good as always. The Mac N Cheese is my favorite on Disney World property. It is actually in the kids section but it is so good. Very creamy and grown up tasting! The Pork Rib was nice and flavorful. The Green Beans and also the Seafood Pot Pie were just OK, nothing to brag about. Admittedly, I am a bit of a bread freak, but I do love their rolls here! On my second plate I just got more Mac N Cheese and Ribs and that was it.

This is my husbands first plate. His second looked the same, at least he knows what he likes!

Starting at the top and going clockwise for him it was Marinated Roast Chicken, Prince Edward Island Sound Mussels, and Mac N Cheese. He loved all of it and got more of the same.

I actually failed to get pictures of the children’s plates, but they had chicken, fruit salad (melon and blueberries with a light dressing), rolls, mashed potatoes, green beans, carrots, and DD2 had Mac N Cheese as well.

Here were our desserts:

We got a Blondie Brownie, a Key Lime Tart, and Mini Vanilla Cupcake. The kids got a chocolate chip cookie, which I also didn’t get a picture of. They had a lot of other desserts to choose from, but I was just getting kind of tired of dessert at this point in the dining plan. We aren’t big dessert eaters and to have it twice a day was beginning to be a bit much, so I took a bite of each of these and that was it. They were good, but not great (seems to be the overall theme here tonight!)

To me this is not worth it for a buffet here. That is just ME though, DH feels it is well worth it and I’m sure the seafood lovers would enjoy it even more as they also had crab-legs, and many other great seafood offerings.

OVERAL THOUGHTS:
We’ve never had a bad meal at Cape May. However, we’ve come 4 or 5 times for dinner, and every time it seems to get a little worse. Don’t get me wrong, it is not bad, it is still good food, but it just seems that the standards seem to be slipping compared to the first time that we went and loved it. Or maybe we have just discovered places that we enjoy going to more than here. Either way, I told DH that I didn’t want to come on our next trip, and he agreed. So, we probably won’t be returning for a while and then we’ll give it another chance. We still like it, but we are giving it a break for a bit.

I've been looking for a Cape May dinner review, and yours is the first I found. Do they still have the crab legs? I had read somewhere about a year ago that they added them to the buffet as well. I am trying to decide of we want to try Cape May for dinner or go back to WCC again.
