From WorstPreviews.com:

According to ProductionWeekly [via IESB], Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been cast in the upcoming Walt Disney Pictures' film "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." It was previously reported that Will Smith was considered for the role of Captain Nemo.

Plot: A fugitive whaler teams up with a naturalist, a mysterious woman and a captain of a futuristic submarine, to search for a lost underwater civilization that holds libraries of vast knowledge and a weapon with the power to destroy mankind.

The new movie is directed by McG (Terminator Salvation) for Warner Bros, which is fast-tracking the project in hopes to finish the film by the end of the year.

wow, Disney really loves the Rock, first that football movie, then witch mountain, then "tomorrowland" and now 20K

And just to add that there is no need to remake 20,000 leagues. Someone did that once and it was awful.
The original is just fine.

Yes, I would imagine that they could also cast Hulk Hogan and Jesse Ventura while there's at it. They all have such depth... :rotfl:

Disney seems to be catering to the tween/teen girl audience a lot these days. We see a lot of the joe bros, hannah montana, and the rock. How about Disney get some great actors like Sam Neil to be captain nemo or arronax. I never saw any of the movies but I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Hope Disney doesn't make a mistake here.

Update:

Director McG is set to remake "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and has previously expressed interest in casting Will Smith as Captain Nemo. Then a few days ago, Production Weekly learned that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was cast instead.

Now, McG has revealed that the Johnson casting is just a false rumor. "I've never spoken to Dwayne Johnson about this," he said. "I like him. He's great. He's a wonderful human being and an excellent screen presence, but we have not spoken about '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.' Not a word."

It turns out that Smith is still his number one choice and talks are currently going on. "I'm out to Will Smith," McG added. "My intention is to show him Terminator and see if he responds to it. We're friendly. We'll see if it's in the cards."

Good lord--Will Smith. The bottom will be out of the tub if they do that.
I'm sure this "remake" will be very faithful to the book.:rotfl:
