dvd burning question

i have been backing up some of my photos but the last two disks i burned after only a few moments, it said it was a write error and the burning failed but when i loaded the disk and opened it the photos are there...is it possible it didn't finalize them somehow? usually it takes me 2 hrs to burn and verify a dvd so i know something isn't right...it is 16x and the nero burn page sets it at maximum speed but that is the only thing i see that is different from the settings on the other disks that burned fine...i tried with 2 different sets of photos to see if maybe something was up with one set but it would be odd to have all those photos from different (4) folders be messed up

2 hours, wow that seems like a long time for one disk....,

whenever I've had problems I try setting the burn speed manually and that has helped..

I wouldn't worry too much about that issue. The didn't finalize would be an issue if in fact it didn't finalize the disk. It will play fine on the orginal computer, but from my experiences it won't play on other players. I have done this myself on cds but not dvds, but I assume it would be the same problem. You should be able to insert the disk in your computer and don't let it automatically start (if it does stop the auto play) then click on "my computer" where you can see all of your drives on the computer. Then right click on your dvd drive (don't open, but right click) when the drop down menu comes up you should see a "finalize disk" option. If it is black then click on it, but if it is grey and won't let you select it, then it should be finalized. Hope this helps P.S. I agree that two hours is awful long for burning photos that don't include video files. By the way using Nero, as you are setting up the disk for burning, in one of the latter steps it usually gives you a check box to chek on for finalizing the disk, but I can't remember which step that shows up in.

my computer is basically out of memory, not sure if that has anything to do with it but it takes forever to do anything, hoping to upgrade soon. it says the disk is full so it must be ok. normally it does validate it but for some reason it says it stopped.
when i rght click i don't get a finalize but it says the disks are full..could i potentially have a problem using this if /when i get another computer?

If your computer is unusually low on disk space, there is an increased chance that a DVD burn will fail somewhere in the process.

If you manually set the burn speed at one of the slower speeds offered, the chance of success is improved.

If the DVD burn reports a failure even at the very end, you cannot be sure that the contents is readable unless you tried to see each and every item that was burned. It would be quicker to try another burn rather than view every one of the 300 odd pictures or the full length of all ten or so videos on the first DVD.

i was just thinking since it seems to be working again(??) i maybe i should just reburn the 2 i wondered about so thanks for clarifying that for me...

If you use Nero and you told it to verify the disc after burning, and it failed - then the disc is bad. Most of the files are probably fine, but somewhere on the disc, there is bad data. I'd toss it and start over.

Like the others said - two hours? If you're burning at 16x (which I rarely do, usually 12x or slower), the burn should take maybe 10 minutes (probably less), and another few minutes to verify it.

and this is with nero "express" i'd hate to use the "slow lane" version
it's taking an hr to burn and an hr to verify, that's if i'm not doing anything on the computer
one more reason why i need a new computer...now if the stinking economy around here would get in gear so i could feel like i could spend some $$, i could stop wasting days on doing one simple task that should take 10mins
