I am wondering what the trip insurance offered when we get the confirmation letter. It offers insurance for your points. They pay out $5/point. The premium is equal to 5.15% of what the payout would be. Here is my question. If we buy the insurance, and have to use it, what happens to my points? Do I still get them in holding, or does Disney take them back at $5 a point?

I may really need to get this insurance, because my brother has brain cancer, and was just given 4-6 weeks to live. Our trip is for Thanksgiving, but if my brother outlives his prognosis, and goes around the time of our trip, we would need to cancel. Or God forbid something happens while we are down there and have to come home early.

Could someone enlighten me on the insurance program? I am thinking I have no idea about what it is about. LOL We are driving, so we won't need the airfare/baggage portion.

The insurance won't pay if you cancel the reservation and still get the use of the points.

It will pay (the $5 payout covers only slightly more than the maintenance fee paid for the year) if your trip is cut short for an insured reason. In this case, the points will already have been committed and won't be returned anyway.

Thanks Doc. So, basically the insurance is if I get down there, and then get a call that my brother passed, and I have to go home? Good enough for me.Thanks.

Another consideration is your use year and if you feel you could use the holding account points. If you have a December use year and have to cancel this trip less then 30 days, will you have time to use them? Probably not, then you could take the $5 per point. If you have an October use year, you would have almost the whole year to reschedule or even rent the points.

We just received a confirmation today that included the insurance brochure. I noticed that there's a time limit on when you can still get the insurance, so you might want to look into that also.

My heart goes out to your family about your brother's illness. Last year, my ex-husband (and father of my then 13-year-old daughter) lost a brief battle with brain cancer. It has been very tough on his whole family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Incidentally, we had to cancel DVC ressies the week prior to our vacation last year because of my exes diagnosis. We didn't want to have to return in the middle, or have my daughter hate vacations forever because of that. Anyway, MS was very nice about finding something else for us later in the summer.

Good luck,
Julie
