Can you buy the trip insurance through someone else...or do you need to use the one that DVC refers you to since this is a point reservation?

Also- can you change a reservation without a penalty or is this a cancellation even if you change dates?

How do I figure the value of the vacation if I am using points.

Anyone book on points and get insurance elsewhere?

Hi vbarry,

If you use a 3rd party trip insurance plan like CSA (or any of the numerous other choices), you have to do this:

Count frequent flyer tickets, award travel, vouchers, reward points & credit card miles as a $0 trip cost. The value is not equal to the money you save by using them. Your trip cost is only the taxes you pay when you exercise them.

I hope this helps you.

I called insuremytrip.com about insuring our cruise that we booked with our DVC points and they would not do it with any of the insurances they sell. Since we are going in July (prime hurricane season) I am planning to do the (overpriced) insurance that DVC offers some time this spring. We are doing back-to-backs on the Wonder (one with points and one with cash) and I had HOPED I could find one single policy to cover both but couldn't. I went ahead & got the DCL insurance for the cash one after I found out I couldn't get one policy to cover both.

Keep in mind that even the DVC trip insurance will not return the points to your account. You'll receive a cash payment which you may, or may not, consider to be adequate.
