DVC trip insurance....and the sometimes “exceptions” for extenuating circumstances

Personally I have never done the DVC trip insurance. I remember looking into it once and couldn’t make much sense of it. I did have to leave in the middle of a trip once due to a family tragedy and DVC was kind enough to put back my lost points with no holds. They could see from my “file” that I did not have a history of trying to take advantage. There was also a couple of times when I missed a banking deadline by a couple of days, and they let me bank anyway. Not talking a huge amount of points for banking...lol usually in borrowing mode.

I am expecting that those “exceptions to the rules” days are over. I don’t think they will be bending the rules to accommodate our memory lapses or trips cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances any more. My question is...if you have used the trip insurance, was it worth it if you had to use it? And what happens with your points? If I recall correctly, when I looked into it it really didn’t help with points.

If anyone can point me in the right direction to a thread that discusses this, I’d appreciate it. And we all better set up reminders for our banking deadlines. I’m making a special calendar with all my banking dates.

I have not used it because you have to buy it in January when MFs are due every year to cover pre existing conditions.

If your cancel is for a covered reason,,,it is not CFAR...then you are reimbursed the MFs, but do lose the points,

It is why I never have done it, I typically travel outside my last 4 months so if I had an emergency cancel, even with holding, I should be able to book something and either go, or give it to friends or family.

Thank you both. I’ll be more vigilant about deadlines going forward...but can’t really do much about those unforeseen circumstances that occur that put your points into holding. I do remember one time when a resale contract came with a handful of points we weren’t supposed to get, but they had to be used with a month or two. The DVC store (sponsor of this board) was able to do a last minute rental....a local couple looking for a weekend and were able to get something at AKL. So there are options.

Thanks again.
