The Rental Store offers trip planning services for a fee now. I had paid a deposit for a confirmed reservation that turned out not to be valid because the member had "cancelled" it and had not let them know. No big deal, no hard feelings. My deposit is being refunded. I've always been happy with my service from them.

However, since I assumed (my fault) that the trip would be transferred to me since it was confirmed, I paid the planning fee upfront. When I asked for a refund, I got what felt like a snarky response that they don't refund planning fees, but in my case they would make an exception. Ok, thank you very much, but why tell me they don't normally refund? Why would you sell a service in advance to people who may not end up getting a trip after all?

So potential renters, don't be a dope like me and be sure not to purchase planning services until the reservation is transferred to your name since you may or may not get a refund.

My guess is that a lot of people pay the Rental Store for a resie, then cancel their trip for reasons of their own. Perhaps the company doesn't want people putting a lot of time and effort into the planning process for customers, and then having customers expecting a refund for that fee if they decide to cancel their trip.

OP, I realize that absolutely is not your situation. I'm just pondering the rule.

I have no rationalization for the snarky attitude you got when you spoke to them. Your life was made more difficult because you relied on the company and they did not provide the product which they promised in their contract with you. If anything, they should have been going out of their way to be nice to you.
