DVC Rental question--wait list?

Hi all,

We are planning our June 2019 trip and are hoping to stay at the Poly by renting DVC through David's Vacation Rental. I submitted my rental request and received an email that basically said that they didn't have a DVC owner willing to rent currently because Poly would have to be their home resort at this point, because it is longer than 7 months out. I opted to go on the waitlist for this.

I wondered if anyone had any experience with this and would be willing to let me know if they were successful or not in reserving at the Poly after being wait listed? I did not list any back up resorts because I really have my heart set on Poly. I would be willing to consider Grand Floridian or Contemporary, if I had no chance at Poly, but those seem to sell out even before Poly does.

I've never rented DVC before, so any input would be appreciated!

Thank you!

You have good chances. The issue is that they need an owner with Poly points to pick up the request. You are booking in DVC's lower demand season, which is to your advantage.

We own at BCV. Our trip last May was kind of last minute, so when we started to look for reservations, we started with OKW since nothing else was available. We waitlisted for BWV and the Poly, but we didn't have much hope that we would get either. Believe it or not, we go them both! Bottom line, I think you have a good chance, just be a bit patient.

I was about to post the same! I do want to add that at 7 months, any DVC owner can book at Poly, and since June is not a high-demand period for DVC, you have a good chance that what you want will be available.

Also, if you're on David's waitlist, if a Poly owner with sufficient points registers with David's before the 7-month window opens, they should be able to book for you at that time.

So your chances are good - stay on that waitlist!

You are comparing two different waitlists. As a DVC member, you were able to waitlist a reservation. The OP is not a DVC member and wants to rent points through David's. Their "waitlist" is waiting for a Poly owner to contact David's and offer to rent their points. That waitlist has nothing to do with whether a reservation is available, but whether a DVC owner with point is available.

Fair point Denise, just wanted to point out that we were able to have a waitlist come through. Someone gave up their reservation, and yes, it's a different waitlist, but it can be done.

Your waitlist and a renter's wait list are two different things though, and your wait list situation really only applies for another DVC owner, not a renter.

I get that. I know I will have a first crack at a waitlist as a member over a renter, but as I said, it can be done.

Not for a renter. Renters cannot waitlist booked units. When a renter is waitlisted by a rental agency, they are waitlisted for owner points to be available for booking.

Agencies will not engage owners to waitlist booked units on behalf of a renter.

Again, I get that. Either way, you're hoping someone comes through for you. You win, have a great night ;)

Why not doing a regular reservation ? Which you can cancel if the wait list turns into a rental.
I thought you had to David's at the 1 year mark for a DVC rental.
So if we wanted November 2019, we would put in a request on November 2018.

We are doing DVC because of the significant price difference. If we can’t do DVC at a monorail resort, we would likely stay off property.

According to David’s website, people should request Poly 8+ months ahead of syay, so we are well within that.

As long as there are not masses of people ahead of you, who will take all the points David’s will have at the 7 month mark, you should be good as Poly definitely will have rooms still at 7 months in June when any resort owner can book.

You can also try to contact a TA that may have access to a block of rooms at a discounted rate. You would be booking a resort room versus the DVC timeshare rental. I cannot list names of TAs on here. They often have agency exclusive offers, although I do not know when the 2019 rates come out or if they already have been released.

Another option is to browse the DVC renters board and contact owners when they post about renting points. This comes with its own risks. Personally, if I were to attempt to rent DVC points, I would use Davids (or DVC Rental Store) for peace of mind. Since you have your heart set on Poly, I thought I would throw that out there as an option.

No. I don't think you're "getting it:".

As an owner, you went on a waitlist for a villa that has been booked up. A renter has NO chance at those units and cannot go on the DVC waitlist. Absolutely none. Anything that opens up will go to an owner who has waitlists for those dates.

The "waitlist" that the OP is on is David's waitlist. It implies that there are villas available for those dates, as of right now, but no owners at Poly, with sufficient points, willing to rent thru David's. If the villas get booked up by owners before a Poly owner contacts David's, the OP is out of luck.

Your example and the OP's situation have nothing to do with one another.

But that assumes that other DVC owners will not book up those Poly studios right at their own 7 month mark. While I do believe that the OP stands a good chance of getting what they want because June is not a high'-demand DVC period, Poly is popular and a lot of DVC owners who do no have Poly as their home resort try to switch to there at 7 months.

I'm impatient, so in the past, I have put in my request with other brokers and searched the various forums available to locate an owner myself with the points available I needed.

We rented points for an Aulani stay that I really wanted to secure for our honeymoon before we booked our flights. I was waitlisted with the two main brokers, but ended up finding an owner on the Rent/Trade forum here that I worked with myself instead. With most reputable owners, you can usually obtain references and many will have their own contract for you to sign as well. It was a seamless transaction, and few bucks cheaper per point than the brokers. Just do your due diligence and understand the point rental pros and cons.

Owners cannot book their home resort until 11 months out. By putting a reservation in with David at 12 months out, you just have to wait for a month to see if he has an owner with points to make that reservation at 11 months out. But it gets you closer to the front of the line if there aren't enough owners with the points needed to make those reservations. Some are much harder to book and need to be booked right at 11 months out exactly in order to get them, like Grand Villas or BCV/BWV during F&W, anything at the GFV.

Yep, what you said. I'm keeping my mouth shut from now on.

I would not be overly concerned at this point.

I would want the reservation booked and confirmed before the 7 month window opens.

We had to wait a bit to find an owner for our most recent trip over Spring Break this year. We checked in the Friday before Easter and where there through the following Sat. So basically the first week of April. We stayed at BCV. We put in our request prior to the 11 month window opening. The agent could tell us that there was availability but it took until late June/early July to find an owner with the points we needed.
