Some friends of ours have bought into DVC. We have talked about it ever since we came back this past June. He suggested that we rent points and try it out. I have been reading the different post and trying to piece together the puzzle.
How do I figure out how many points I would need to buy/rent?
Is it a problem renting or using the points if your a "non-member"?
Would it be best for me to buy/rent them or have our friends have them transferred onto their account and going from there?
I know I have alot of questions, but any input would be greatly welcomed!
Thanks ever so much!

At the top of the page, you can see how many points would be needed for whatever resort you choose and for the respective time period and villa size.

If you go over to the Rent/Trade Board, you can see how some people make their requests. There are also FAQs at the top of that board with some info on renting points.

Good luck.

Here's a link to the DVC point chart page: http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-vacation-club/DVCpoints.shtml This will help you figure out how many points you'll need.

Many non-members rent points and there is no problem with it. A non-member staying on rented points is entitled to hotel amenities just like a member is. You won't be able to partake in the pool-hopping perk or the discount perks until you're a member, however.

If you rent the points from a DVC member, then that member will be the one that has to make all of your reservations and requests through member services on your behalf.

If you'd feel more comfortable having your friend be your contact to member services then having the points transferred to his/her account might be easier for you. Be sure to get aquainted with the rules for transferred points (or at least make sure your friend is). It's virtually the same except that your friend cannot bank or borrow transferred points if you end up cancelling the trip for some reason. And the transferred points will also have use-year limitations attached to them but for some reason that, too, is a gray area. Some DVC experts may be able to further elaborate on the tranferring points issues or you might find the answers by searching previous threads.

Whichever option you choose, you'll LOVE your stay and I bet we'll be welcoming you home soon...at least I sure hope so!
