Can you confirm if my understanding is correct here ...

We're renting DVC points.

If we decide to get the dining plan, we would also need to get tickets through Disney.

If we don't get the dining plan - than we could get tickets on our own through Undercover Tourist.

Correct?

Initially I wasn't planning to do the dining plan. We wouldn't typically get dessert at every meal and with 3 kids I wasn't sure if we'd really do 7 sit down meals.

But - as I look at it more I'm interested in doing probably 3 character/buffet meals + the castle. So that's already 5 of the 7. And with the increase in buffet/character meal prices, maybe Dining plan is the way to go. Any thoughts?

Thanks! :)

Nope. We always rent points and get tickets through UT. We did the Dining Plan last year, and we still got our tickets through UT. DVC members do have to pay the entire cost of the dining plan the day the dining plan is set up, and only DVC members can set up the dining plan for renters, so you need to work with your DVC member to see if he's willing to set it up for you, and you need to figure out payment to him for it, since he'll have to pay Disney the day he makes the call. Typically what we do with the guy we rent from is send him a check about a month before our trip, then he calls Member Services and sets up our dining plan for us, but there are other ways of doing it.

You can make your ADRs before you have the Dining Plan set up. For any prepaid meals (like CRT), the day you eat, they'll just credit back the cost of your meal to your credit card and apply your dining credits instead.

we are renting points as well and it is our understanding that your dvc member can use your credit card to book dining. They dont have to use their own.

We rented points in Nov., bought our tickets from UT and asked our owner if she could add the dining plan for us. She was great, we didn't need to pay her until a week before for the dining portion, which I know was very unusual.

I've rented points the past 5 years and doing so again this summer and always purchase the dining plan.

Through your DVC member you can purchase the dining plan on it's own separate from park tickets.
Disney now charges the dining plan immediately upon purchase so you may want to wait until a couple fo weeks before you leave to purchase it - why give Disney all the money up front? If you do this you can stil make ADRS at your 180 mark.
You will have to work out with the DVC member how you will pay for the dining plan...using your credit card? send them a check? whatever is best for them. I am thinking of purchasing a Disney Gift Card from my disney store in the amount of the DDP then I can give the gift card # to the DVC member to use to pay for DDP. It's up to you if you trust someone else with you credit card # info.

You can purchase your tickets through Undercover if you want - that is what I do as they have the best prices.

Also, when you check in your dining plan will be on your KTTW card and your park tickets will be seperate. If you want, you can go to the concierege at your resort and ask them to put your park tickets on your KTTW card if you want everything on the same card for convenience. I have done this every time without any problems.

I' not sure when you're going but I usually purchase my tickets from Undercover and the DDP around a month before I leave - that's alwasy been plenty of time to get the tickets from UT. But keep an eye out especially here on teh boards as the past few year tickets proces have gone up usually around June or so...in that case I make sure I order my tickets from UT prior to the price increase.

On a DVC points reservation, there is absolutely no requirement to purchase tickets in order to add a dining plan. You may purchase your tickets wherever you wish. The member you are renting from will need to add the dining plan to the reservation for you, and it must be done no later than 2 days before you arrive.

Thanks! I think I was getting confused with free dining (do you need tickets for that?)

We're renting from someone we know and she offered to set up the dining plan when we get closer. So I'm not too worried about the logistics of that.

Yes, you do need tickets for free dining. Free dining is actually not available on a DVC reservation. It is only applicable to room/tickets package reservations.
