DVC points for cruise and insurance

ok so I just booked my first cruise using some of my dvc points and I was hopeing to get info on DVC's new insurance and I was told by the CM that I wasn't able to purchase their insurance policy because I live in the state of NH..Is this right?

So since I can't use DVC's insurance what do I do now? I used points for only 1 person and cash for the other 2 persons on my reservation, do I just get insurance for the cash portion and hope for the best that I don't have to cancel for any reason? I was also wanting the insurance for extra medical coverage just in case.

I purchase trip insurance from AAA for my cruises when I book on DVC points. I take out the policy specifically for medical coverage.

I don't bother with the points coverage as the reimbursement is only $5 per point.

Thanks for the info but I was wondering where the $5 a point amount comes from? Is that going thru DVC insurance or is that a reimbursement you would receive from travel insurance?

That is from Access America, the brochure which comes with your cruise reservation confirmation in the mail. I was not aware NH residents could not purchase this. Keep in mind this is not coverage for any reason that you decide to cancel. There are specific conditions set forth in the policy.

That is the only insurance that provides coverage for DVC points. You may find another carrier that will insure the dollar value of your trip, though, not all of them will cover it. But where you stated you were primarily looking for medical coverage on the trip, that is why I recommended AAA.

The DVC insurance has changed. It's now the amount of dues per point is reimbursed. It's a flat $79 premium per use year (which could get tricky if your reservation has points from more than 1 use year).

Thanks for the info...the thing I found strange is I can't even purchase point from DVD because I live in NH...

Has anyone had problems getting medical insurance for everyone if they paid points for 1 person and cash for 2 others.. And if so which company did you use besides aaa..

Sorry, I have not read up on the new insurance options and I did not realize they took away the original insurance choice ($5 pp).

If you purchase medical (or for that matter luggage, airplane, etc.) insurance outside of the DVC recommended vendor, it will not matter if you paid with dvc points or cash. The insurance companies will issue the policies based on length of travel, passengers, etc.

Ok I understand that I think..but here's my problem... when we cruised this past Feb on the kids cruise free special the rep at the insurance company said I had to put down what I paid for the kids which was the taxes only to get them on the policy..which was at least something but with paying for myself with points how will I get medical coverage if I can't Insure some amount for the trip to get me on the policy?

He must have been trying to quote you for more than the medical coverage.

Last October I purchased medical coverage, which included some luggage and trip delay benefit as well. I bought for myself, DH, DD and my mom. It was $25.00 each. Never had to discuss what the cruise costs, nor how I paid for it...
