I just booked a DVC members only cruise for August 24-28, 2015. I have been on four disney cruises but never the DVC. I am taking my husband, mother in law and grandma and we have two rooms. It also falls on my birthday. Is there anything I need to know? Anything I really must pack? Do they still do pirate night and a formal night?

Bring an extra empty bag for all the cool stuff they give you. Yes they do both optional formal and pirate night (unless it's Alaska. I think they are doing Frozen night instead).
Read your navigators closely as there will be lots of special seminars/programs offered that aren't offered on a regular cruise (special guest speakers etc). Stop by the DVC desk often. And you will have a great time. Everyone on the cruise will have drank the kool-aid so there is a common denominator with everyone you will talk to.

Dumb questions. Do you have to book these with dvc points or can you pay cash? If you can pay cash, does it matter otherwise if you bought your points direct or resale?

I have never been on a DVC cruise.
How do I find out which cruise is a DVC cruise for 2016 ?

Cash or Points. You can't book the Member Cruise at all if you only have resale points that were purchased after 3/20/2011.

DVC has not yet announced the Member Cruise(s) for 2016. They usually do a snail mail announcement and it will be added to the 'Member Experiences' page on the member website.

how much were past member cruises. I would love to go but don't have a large amount of money to up front.

I think if you buy from reseller they dont give you the DVC benefits

The August cruise will be a 4-nighter with 2 days at Castaway Cay. Some of the 'Special Guests' over the past two years have been Disney Legends Alice Davis, Marty Sklar, and Tony Baxter. "Ducky" Williams and Stacia Martin have been there. Alex Maher and Mark Ceppella, from Disney Design Group, put on the Animation Academy where they teach you how to draw different characters. Bill Farmer - the voice of Goofy - did a show. If Maryellen Hooper is doing a show, go see her. She is very funny. All-in-all, we had a great time.

I looked at my Navigators from last year's member cruise and all 4 nights have "cruise casual" as evening attire, but on the second night it said"pirate or cruise casual."

For me, the highlights last year were anything that was hosted by Stacia Martin, the talks about Disney's presence in the 1964 World's Fair ( featuring Alice Davis and Marty Slkar), and finally the show Broadway and Beyond!

Looking forward to meeting you and other Disboard folks on the cruise!

Bobbi:)

Just to clarify…..

Is it that you can only book with points if you bought DVC resale before 3/20/2011 but you can still book the cruise with cash if you bought resale after 3/20/2011?

OR are you saying that if you bought after 3/20/2011 resale you are not allowed to go on the DVC cruise at all???

I have heard you don't get the signature collection DVC benefits if you buy resale (such as booking ANY DCL cruise with DVC points) but i had not heard that you were not eligible to go on the DVC member cruise at all if you became a "resale" member after 03/20/2011.

If all of your points were purchased resale after 3/20/2011, you can't book the Member Cruise at all. The Member Cruise is still technically a Disney Collection Reservation and a such, subject to the resale restrictions.

Ah, I see. Good to know! Thanks!

We went on the member cruise for the first time in 2014. What a blast! Don't miss the Disney legends..so entertaining and interesting! Plus we had two guys from ESPN who were a hoot. The entertainment was terrific also. Wish they would have that same quality on all the cruises. And the stuff you get litereally does take up a whole bag. We are members but paid cash. It just doesn't seem like using points is a good value.
