We're new DVC members. Have resale contract. Got email couple of weeks ago from DVC saying to call them for a 30 min new member orientation call. So I did that yesterday. Most of the info I already knew about thanks to these boards and the DVC Fan Youtube videos.

BUT something that I did NOT know about was that resale members can book a cash reservation for up to 25-30% off at DVC villas (not regular hotel rooms). Member Services CM said it's based on availability, cash inventory is different than points inventory, and must be booked over the phone w/Member Services. CM also said that you can book this for other friends & family, just put their name on the reservation, but you have to pay for the 1st night's deposit when you initially call to book the reservation.

So today, I mentioned this info to DH. YDD & I are interested in staying for cheaper than reg. cash rates @ Riviera because: (1) the kids & I (well, DH, too) really love Riviera; and (2) we're resale members & can't use our points to stay at Riviera.

What did my Negative Nancy DH say to this?
"So what you're saying is that you get to pay less of an overpriced rate for something that's already overpriced to begin with." LOL.

Keep in mind, his #1 favorite place to eat at all of WDW is at Riviera. ** I ** know and the KIDS know that he'll want to stay at Riviera. HE just doesn't know this yet. :rotfl2:

And let's be honest here...the real solution to that will be for us to buy some direct points down the road. :-)

I'm surprised more people don't know about that perk.

We have used it several times when we have been out of points or when point rooms were not available but cash was.

Still hoping for cash availability at HHI for the front end of our stay.

I like how you are steering your DH to adding on at RIV. First the restaurants then get him into the rooms :)
Are you sure your not interviewing to be a DVC Guide? :)

On our prior WDW trip 2 yr ago, we stayed at AoA. Loved the Skyliner. Ate at Primo Piatto multiple times and DH raves about that place. My YDD still craves their pizza. ODD still talks about the tomato soup there. Even DH talks still about how good the food was there.

I don't know if we'd actually add on direct at RIV, though, because of its resale restrictions. I'd be more inclined to add on direct at CCV if possible. AND if we add on direct down the road, it'll be with a few small individual contracts one at a time (like 50 here, 50 there until we get to about 150 pts).

But before we do that, we want to add probably another 75-100 pt resale at Aulani so we'll have enough points to get a 2 BR there every other year.

So as you can see, I'm playing the long game. First part of this whole strategy was getting my DH to stay at Aulani. Mission accomplished there this past summer! And he reluctantly agreed to go w/me on their DVC tour of a grand villa on that trip. And he asked the DVC guide a million questions and then was like, "The only way I'd ever agree to own DVC is if it's at Aulani. I don't want to own anywhere else and I only want to use my points at Aulani."

Me to DH: Ok, honey
Me in my head: Yeah, we'll see about that. You'll change your mind.

You see...1 of DH's good friends (the guy was a groomsman in our wedding) lives in Orlando. Friend's wife is a CM at AK (is a stage manager at 1 of the AK shows). And I haven't proposed the idea to DH yet, but how awesome would it be for us to be able to have DH's awesome friend & his awesome wife to be able to stay w/us a few days there as a staycation? It would be great. Do a couples trip during Fall Food & Wine w/them? That would be pretty fantastic.

It WILL happen. But I have to get DH into an actual Riviera room first...on a discounted price.

I'm stoked that this 25% discount is even an option! :-)

Well thought out!! Yes we can get some more Aulani points and then a small contract at the world.

I like how you have that ace up your sleeve with DH's good friends being there in Orlando!!

And I don't know if you know, but you can call for reservations up to 11 months in advance, you don't have to wait until 7 months, as you would for a non-home resort booking with points. I admit that I didn't know that part of it until I mentioned to MS that I was considering it.

If you have an annual pass, check for discounts there through regular reservations. I got 35% off for an OKW 1 bedroom. Bad thing is they can’t be combined with a points reservation. I used it to book an extra night. If you go through member services, they can combine it, at least that was the way years ago. When I was first a member (1999), Friday and Saturday were much higher points. I think a 1 bedroom in May was 48 points. So I would book a weekend night on cash (arrival day).

Bouncebacks are also 35% off on villas.

That 25% cash discount on DVC rooms has existed since the beginning of DVC. Just note that what you are hoping to reserve may often not be available and even when available it might not show up until after the passing of the 7-month window. Also, the discount is off the regular room price shown for the room. If Disney itself is providing any discounts off its usual rental price, you get 25% off the usual rental price not 25% off the discounted price, e.g., sometimes it can even be cheaper to rent through Disney than try to use the 25% discount.

I have had both reservations made through Disney and DVC linked as continuing reservations.

FWIW, this was not the case when I was booking for a friend at Aulani to add a cash stay night to a reservation I made for him. They charged the same price as the Aulani website.

Yes this is a good option when there is availability and you don’t have enough points. Thanks for the reminder. Cost even for discounted rate is usually fairly high. Better to use points

I was able to snag a 1 Bedroom @ Boardwalk Villas last 12/27-01/03 with the DVC discount when there were absolutely no discounts available when booking through Disney website. I told the cast member what dates I wanted and room type and they told me what was available. As you could imagine that was a significant savings for those travel dates.

I didn't know about this either and it would help me cover the missing date in my upcoming trip. (I do have a WL I've been stalking for the missing date.) I just checked and the villa with same room type / view is available on my date for cash. I was thinking of booking it now and then if my WL doesn't come through, contact MS to ask for the DVC discount. Do you think that would work? I feel weird about calling to ask for the discount now in case our WL works out and we have to cancel the cash room. Not sure which way is better.

It wasn’t a continuing reservation, it was 1 reservation. Say I booked May 1, 2 on member cash, then May 3, 4, 5 on points. I got an updated reservation for May 1 to 6. Housekeeping May 4. Continuing reservations seem to have magic band issues. When I did the AP rate, I had to check in again since they were separate reservations. As i mentioned this was awhile ago, so it may have changed.

I have never had just one reservation only what MS has informed me were continuing reservations (Their words not mine). I have had to check out and check back in but I was just concerned about staying in the same room.

It has been awhile since I have done it at WDW but HHI did issue new room keys this summer so the magic band issues may still be happening. For some reason the people at HHI say it’s not possible to use them although VB is able to use the iPads to link them.

I’d call MS and book on DVC discount now, if available - having the room available to the public for cash doesn’t guarantee it’s available for DVC discount. There won’t be a problem if your WL comes through and you cancel the cash reservation.
