Has anyone had to use the insurance offered through DVC for your trip? If so, from what I understand they pay you money for your points that you didn't end up using. How do they figure out how much is owed to you? Is it what you purchased your points at, or less as if you were renting the points out? We are traveling this year during hurricane season and are seriously considering getting the insurance. Does the insurance also cover airfare? If you did have to make a claim how long did it take for you to be reimbursed? I am assuming hurricanes and medical issues are reasons for cancelling. Thank you in advance for your help!

The DVC insurance pays $5 per point, hardly worth it. You can buy a plan that includes airfare. I would ask about hurricanes, some insurances do not cover weather unless flights are cancelled for over 24 hours.

I am going to Disney's Vero Beach Resort July 29th through August 5th.

Let's see. Hot summer weather, Florida, Atlantic Ocean!?? :sad2: :scared1: :scared:  :crazy2:

I am also looking at the insurance. I will be getting the number of the insurance provider from Member Services. If the cost is reasonable I am buying it.

One poster indicates $5 per point would be hardly worth it. I am using 300 points, so that would be $1,500 that would be covered in my case. In my neighborhood, $1,500 is like real money. (Thanks to Yogi Berra for my skills in using the english language.) :teeth:

We'll be using 240 points for our vacation, which is late in our use year. Recently purchased the insurance for our June trip. I'd rather have some compensation for losing the points than none at all. BTW, the insurance needs to be purchased before you get into the penalty period for cancelling (30 days out).

If you will not be able to reschedule the trip, it might be worth it. But if you know you could reschedule, I would do that before taking $5 per point. Most times DVC returns points to your account in the case of a hurricane (although that is not guaranteed).

I think it depends on the points and overall cost of your trip as to whether or not it would be worth it. As you indicate, $1500 is no chump change. We just received the insurance info & I believe it's a little more than $5 pp. However, the fee is a percent of the overall value.

RE: airfare, that plan costs around $30 per person. Again, depends on the cost of your tickets and the airline's policy. We usually fly Southwest and they have NO FEE for cancellations. When you rescheduled you will have to pay the difference in the fare, which may be more or you could get money back. Southwest is great at running sales...Spirit offeres a cash value voucher for cancellations, then charges you $40 + any increase in fare when you rebook.

We have a 108 pt. stay planned for Dec. & will consider the point insurance, but not the airfare.

Happy decision making!
