Strongly agree with all of this. I was pretty against losing Maelstrom to Frozen…but there are a lot of actual countries with actual Disney stories set in them or character associated with them and they really need a few more rides around World Showcase…and while we’re at it, I want Marrakesh back too.I agree that change is part of what keeps Disney special and I think the parks do need to evolve over time. There are so many former attractions and experiences guests still look back on fondly and as long as Disney continues creating things that guests will someday miss once they are gone, change can absolutely be a positive.
My biggest issue is Disney replacing attractions instead of truly expanding the parks. I am not even talking about building a fifth gate. Parks like AK, HS, and Epcot all have expansion pads that could be utilized instead of removing existing attractions.
SWGE replaced the Streets of America area and only added two rides and a quick service location. Even with Monsters, Inc., the entire Muppets Courtyard is being rethemed, but the coaster is really the only net new addition. Tropical Americas is essentially replacing three rides with three rides and swapping one play area for another. I am sure Casita and the carousel will have higher hourly guest throughput than Primeval Whirl and TriceraTop Spin, but Indiana Jones is the E ticket attraction and will have similar capacity to Dinosaur, so what is truly being added overall?
These parks already have far fewer attractions compared to MK, so it would be great to see true additions, like a new country in Epcot or attractions added to every pavilion. If Disney wants to move further away from the original Epcot concept with IP based attractions like Frozen, then fully commit to it. Ratatouille is a great example of how to expand successfully. Unfortunately, the planned Mary Poppins attraction for the UK pavilion never happened.
The Epcot overhaul also removed Innoventions West, scaled back the original plans due to budget cuts, and essentially rebuilt the same building into a “festival center” (if you can call it that), even though Wonders of Life had already filled that role during festivals for years. Now Wonders of Life sits closed and underutilized. The same goes for Stitch’s Great Escape in MK. There are plenty of dormant or overlooked spaces throughout the parks that could be refreshed and repurposed before removing attractions that are still drawing guests.
