We are looking to buy at Riviera since it meets all of our needs. We already have a traditional trip booked in March, so we would swap that to DVC. I have been looking at availability calculators online and see that Riviera studios are already booked. I am curious if these calculators are the same as the actual booking tool you will have as a DVC (would you see more availability when looking to book through the DVC site)? I also wonder if they just won't have all of the units available yet. Since time is short, we may end up booking at another resort for the first trip which is ok, but I was curious how accurate these availability tools are.

Not sure what booking calculator you have access to, but non-DVC members cannot see DVC availability.

When you buy, ask your guide to make the March reservation at the Riviera that you want as a condition of the purchase. He/She should easily be able to make that happen. If the DVC inventory is all booked, guides can pull from the inventory still owned by Disney (unsold as yet to Members) to make the sale.

They are not real-time looks at availability. They are a snapshot in time. DVC actual availability changes moment by moment and can only be viewed by using the members website.

Since you traditionally go and are not DVC, I assume you are thinking about a studio. Now as points are sold Disney releases more rooms for booking. But as of now, unless more inventory is released (opened for members) studio availability is next to zero for March of 2020. Tower studio - no availability, Standard View - March 30th, Preferred view March 6, 26, 30.
This may not apply for your 1st trip if the guide can get a room out of Disney's inventory for you, but it a lesson for the future. In order to get the most of you DVC points, you need to book before 7 months, and many times at 11 months, based on room type and time of year.

Thank you very much. Typically we book a year in advance, so we will likely be able to book at the 11 month mark going forward.

Buy Rivera direct and ask your guide to make the welcome home reservation for your March trip...
