I'm not sure exactly what the situation is, but I thought I should post a possible warning thread just in case.. Meant to do this last night but I forgot..

Last Tuesday was my birthday, so when my DD, her DH, and my DGD came up this past weekend, they brought a birthday cake that DD and my DGD made for me on Friday afternoon - chocolate cake (Duncan Hines) with chocolate frosting (Duncan Hines).. The canned frosting was purchased during the summer and had a "best if used by date" of July 2010..

We cut the cake and as I put it in my mouth, I spit it out immediately.. (Thank goodness DD, DGD and her dad hadn't started eating theirs yet..) There was something horribly wrong with the frosting - tasted like medicine - or some kind of nasty chemical.. It was a very, VERY strong taste.. I tested an area of the cake that had no frosting on it and that was fine - so it was definitely the frosting.. DD's DH then tasted just a "smidge" and also immediately detected a problem..

DD said she still had the can at home, so she was going to see if there was a telephone number on the label so she could contact them today to inform Duncan Hines that there might be a problem..

Anyhow - perhaps DD just happened to get a "bad" can.. However, if you use this kind of frosting, I would be very careful about testing it first - just a teeny, tiny bit.. Believe me - the taste was SO strong that you would know right away if you only had a smidge on the end of a toothpick..

Could be nothing, but better safe than sorry..

We pitched the whole cake in the garbage.. They are going to bake another one and bring it up next weekend - Betty Crocker - LOL.. ;)

I'm sorry this happened to your cake, it would never happen in my house because nobody would get through frosting it without eating a few spoonfuls! Your DD and DGD must have a lot of willpower! Keep us posted.

Even though the "use by" date was for summer 2010, it's possible that if they purchased it during the summer, it might have sat somewhere where there were large temperature swings and that might have altered the taste of the frosting.

I would definitely contact the company and alert them to the issue. It could simply be an environmental effect, or something could be wrong with it. Either way, the company will probably send DD some coupons for replacements.

Glad no one ate it and got sick.

How strange! We had a can of DH-Chocolate about a month ago that was not right. Also with a 2010 use by date. I opened it and the top was discolored and shriveled. :confused3 (We didn't taste it though....just threw it away...LOL!)

Very interesting.. I'll have to pass that info on to my DD..

I wish I could remember what I used, but I had used some canned frosting about 6 months ago and something was very NASTY about it. It actually made me feel awful for awhile. I promptly threw the cake out, but it was the frosting. Of course, I can't remember what brand it was.

Definitely call or email Duncan Hines right away. They will likely send an envelope for you to mail the product and packaging back to them to help them to determine what happened. I've had something similar happen with a bag of bagels.

HOw come no one called the customer complaint number on the can and told them about it?

I have found this medicinal smell in frostings with artificial vanilla. Now, I make my own frosting.

Never discard a product that you suspect may be a problem. Contact the company and find out if they want it returned to them for testing. It may be a production problem affecting a lot of product, or it could be as simple as one store not handling the product properly. Either way, any food producer will go out of their way to insure quality products. Thier reputation and possible liability depends on it.
