DS's teacher had the TV on in class all day

you obviously don't have children.....

The teacher should have been teaching! Television should not have been on for any reason unless it was to support the curriculum.

Speak with the teacher first to assure you that the television will not be on in the coming days and then follow up with the principal. You do not need to call other parents - deal with your issue independently.

On 9/11 - Principal chose to not tell the children what was happening (grades PreK through grade 8 / 4 year olds to 14 years old). We were able to keep them isolated from the horror and continue school as usual. Then, the family could handle how they would tell their children. What purpose would it have served to tell the children and cause them anxiety without their parents near them? The next day, our school counselor spoke with students about the event. All were in pretty good frame of mind because their parents handled the situation not the school.

That is definitely wrong. As a teacher, I feel it is up to the parents to decide how much information they give their child. I'll answer questions if my students ask, but that's about it. 11 years old is not old enough to fully understand what is going in. You definitely need to talk to the teacher about what happened and decide if you need to go the principal from there.
