DSL v. cable hook-up

I have fond when sharing music files people with cable lines get faster downloads than DSL lines do. I also have noticed when downloading from others if I connect to another cable subscriber I get great speed and if I hook onto a DSL user my speeds really lag. So as far as music from my experiance Cable is far superior to DSL for upload and download speeds in that area.

DSL will lag in upload speed since residential DSL is Asynchronous DSL (downloads MUCH faster than uploads). Upload speeds with ADSL are generally limited to 128k or 256k connections. But that's not generally a factor for most users.

Another thing about speed, as Lisa alludes to, it may be limited by the server on the other end. You can only download as fast as the source can upload.

Exactly Mike no matter how fast your connection is if the other side doesn't have a great connection it will be slow. If I had the money I would run FIBER to my house and have a full fiber connection BUT witht he cost of the cable etc I used to do fiber and data and voice cabling it is very cost prohibitive unless you can get enough people to purchase it with you and share the cost. I was toying witht he idea of a T1 line for the house but that is quite expensive over 500 a month for a decent carrier that handles T1 lines.

Stay tuned Lisa, most of the major telecoms are in some stage of trialing fiber-to-the-home or what may be more reasonable, fiber- to-the-node/neighborhood which will allow for more bandwidth and speed. This is in the initial stages, but may go forward if the regulatory bodies don't make it unattractive. Here in CT, a few years ago there was limited DSL availability. Today we reach approximately 95% of the state. Things can change in a hurry.

Thanks for the heads up Mike but I live in Canada LOL. We cabled a private community where I live with fibre running to every home and full data and telecom in each house along with home automation. It was a large project the community was on a private golf course and was limited to 300 homes. The cost of the work we did was just over 7 million dollars.

Another person who is on Cable checking in. Even with many people on the internet on the same cable line, I don't really notice a drop in connection speed, especially since Roadrunner caps your connection to 10 mbps anyway.

In our household, we'd never change from cable to DSL. We're happy with Roadrunner and their customer service. Also, since we have ours bundled with cable tv, it was a good deal for us. For what we have now, we would've ended paying the same amount or more for satellite TV and DSL.

The fastest connection RoadRunner offers is actually 6 Mbps, while the majority of their standard residential connections are 2 Mbps.

We have RoadRunner through Brighthouse cable here in Central Florida. I had a few problems with bad modems in the beginning, but they were sure to comeout next day to replace them. Now, I have the cable and power surge protected and I haven't had an issue in a few months.

I had DSL in New Hampshire before we moved. We were about a mile from the nearest CO (central office) and cable was not offered yet.

All in all, both will be a LOT better than dial up. You'll never go back, that is for sure!

I've had both. I would never give up my cable for SBC DSL ever again! I had more trouble with the DSL line being down--every holiday weekend! My cable has been running along with no problems for over a year.
