tonight he had 3! Wanna know why? He forgot to bring his language book to class (he left it in his locker because some days they don't use the book) the teacher asked him where his book was and he told him he left it in his locker. The teacher then told him he had to write "I will not forget my World of Language Book Again" not just 1 page, but 5 pages of it . . . I understand the punishment to an extent . . .it was DS first offense of forgetting it . . .he's in 7th grade and should know better than to go to class unprepared, but I think 5 pages is a bit steep considering all the other work he has to do . . . So here he sits writing . . .I feel bad for him honestly, he's such a hard worker and gets excellent grades . . .always completes his homework and studies for quizzes/tests . . .He's my baby . . . :sad1:

Ok, vent over . . . ::yes::

That is WAY over the top, sorry. At DS's school they get 3 locker passes/class/quarter. If they don't use any of the locker passes during the quarter they get 10 extra credit points. If they use all of them, they are done going to their locker so they won't be able to work on any assignments in class. 5 pages of lines is TOO much.

It might have been more productive for the teacher to require him to copy a famous speech or quotes over and over again...
the other is just useless .

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks it was a bit much . . .I like the quote thing though . . . ::yes:: He's almost done . . .4 pages down, 1 to go and look its only 7:05 . . . ::yes::

Um yeah that seems over the top. What good is writing a phrase over and over going to do? Just a waste of time if you ask me. Although something like that could easily be done in front of the tv. :rotfl:

Wow! You handled this much better than I ever would have. I would have sat down and written a short but firmly worded note to Mr SO and SO. stating that the punishment does not fit the crime.
Some of these teachers that have this riculous need to push the limits on the kids are the same teachers that wonder why the kids have no respect for them.

Wow, 2 hours a night! That's ridiculous! Kids should be able to have some down time, they're in school all day.

As far as the punishment, that's just plain stupid.

I honestly didn't realize teachers still made kids write things like that anymore. Where have I been? What will that punishment really accomplish anyhow?

Some of you need to sit in a class and see what they are really like.

Sorry about that assignment. Wasted time. Kids aren't allowed to be human and forget something now and then.

DS has forgotten a book once. A demerit slip came home to be signed. Give me a break. I have a major problem with the demerit slips. Since he was young, everything I've read said reinforce good behavior, correct but play down the bad. Well, school seems to EMPHASIZE the bad with demerit slips. He's had his share for what I consider stupid things over the past year or two. He hasn't once come home with a slip praising something he's done. :sad2:

That's just nuts. I agree with one of the other posters, maybe writing out quotes or something similar would've fit. Also 2 hours of homework is just wrong.

What a dumb punishment.

Won't be his first or his last though.

It's hard to teach in a classroom when kids don't bring thier supplies.

I usually assign 25 sentences, then let them go to their locker. If it is a more severe offense, or repeated, then they write an essay on responsibility or why it is important to come to class prepared. :cool1: Jr. High is a tough age. They are forgetful and if you let them go to their locker then they take advantage.

That is crazy! (I teach 7th gr. Math...) First of all, I have been teaching for 9 years now and from college on have always been told to never ever assign lines anymore - at every school where I have taught. Then, for the past four years, most schools around me are going to having class sets of books in the classrooms so the students can leave their books at home. No more forgetting books in the locker for class or for homework. It is wonderful! Even before then, I wouldn't punish kids for not having a book, I would just make them look on with the person next to them. If it became a repeat problem, then we would deal with it accordingly...
The only thing I can see is not letting them go to their locker to get the book - it wastes class time and some kids would do it on purpose to get out of the room.
I can totally see why you were upset over that one!

You should have had him do it on Word. Then he could copy and paste it. He would have been done in a jiffy. (He could have even done 10 or 15 pages to show that he was really sorry.) Then, if the teacher had a problem with it, you could have requested a conference. This punishment is absolutely asinine.

That teacher would not be liking me...my child would NOT be doing that assignment at all and I would be at the school to tell them in person what I think of it. We also do not do homework on weekends which I make known to the teacher as soon as school starts...weekends are our family time and we are not going to be stuck in the house doing homework.

I think Texan Mousketeer has the right thinking: "if it became a repeat problem, .. deal with it accordingly"!...everyone makes mistakes, clearly this is a good student who messed up once - and the writing lines thing is just not appropriate!

I have a question for you. Do you expect special treatment for your child because you told the teacher that they will not be doing any homework on the weekend?

Are you sure it was his first offense? Kids have a way of bending the truth. Could it be that this has happened before and the teacher doesn't want it to happen again?

I hated doing homework when I was a kid, but, you're joking, right? If not, I wish your kids a lot of luck in high school and college because I don't know of anyone who did well and never did homework on the weekends.

Yes, it was his first offense . . .I was only objecting to the repetitive writing, and the excessive amount of it for something so stupid.
