Playing dodgeball after school today, he put out his arm to try to break a fall and he broke his wrist in the process. I guess it's about time, he hasn't broken anything up till now and he'll soon be 11.
He's in a splint, must see an ortho doc for a cast, and with the holiday we probably won't get an appointment until next week.

His big disappointment is he now can't play in our family football game on Thursday.

:(
My son broke his in July 2001 while at the Boy Scout National Jamboree in Virginia. The doctors (it was on an army base) gave him an extra thick camo cast! DS's was a hairline fracture, he needed the cast on for only 4 weeks and it healed wonderfully. He's never been bothered with the wrist since. (Pain, aching, etc.)

Why wouldn't the emergency room doctors go ahead and put a cast on it today?

Tell your DS to go easy and rest and keep the arm elevated, it really helps keep the swelling down.

Poor boy :( So sorry to hear about his wrist. Sending tons of PD so that he feels better soon.

The didn't cast it at the ER because the break is right next to the growth plate. The doc there said he wanted an expert to decide how to proceed. He said if an adult had the same fracture he wouldn't have hesitated but since he's still growing he wanted to be sure it was done the best way possible.

I'm sorry :( I know how it feels. Brittany broke her finger playing dodgeball, and Kelsea broke her arm falling off a horse. Kelsea loved her casts though.

Oh dear.. Give him a hug for me - okay?

We went through this with my 6yo ds a couple of months ago. He broke his right wrist. He ended up having 2 casts put on. He loved those casts, he misses them.

I hope your ds isn't in much pain. Good luck at the ortho.:)

Hoping he feels better real soon, Gail. I was lucky as a kid, no broken bones.

Ouch! Poor thing, I hope he doesn't have much pain.

The good news, he will heal super fast, and the ER doc was smart enough to know what he did not know. Very cool.

I can make you feel better if you like:

My cousin has twins, and they are 'busy'. When they were about 2, the boy climbed onto the back of the couch, did a swan dive, and fractured his elbow (in 2 places). No sooner had he had his cast removed, when he was in his highchair, his sister was on the floor, he threw something at her, she climbed the chair to get him, and fell and broke her arm. In 2 places!!!

My cousin was CONVINCED the hospital was going to send DSS after her for beating her kids.

They are both fine and healed completely.

Thanks everyone for your good wishes. He's in more pain today but being waited-on by Grandma while I'm at work. We have an appointment to get his cast on Monday.

One tip on the boards was very helpful for us when my ds broke his arm-ask for a waterproof cast.:) The cast itself is waterproof (made of fiberglass), but the inside protection stuff is actually what needs to be waterproof. My ds was able to take a shower, etc. without worrying about putting anything over his cast to protect it (had to do that with the sling).

I'm sorry he's still hurting. A little tylenol will help with the pain.

Thanks for the cast suggestion....this is our first break in the family so I didn't know they existed.

I didn't either.

Poor guy, I'm sorry he's hurting today. :(
