%90 of them don't even work so no they don't pay taxes.
Source? Because according to the federal govt 50% of snap benefits go to the elderly or children. Another 40% go to households that have income. Less than 10 percent of snap beneficiaries receive cash welfare. You know who gets snap- families of enlisted soldiers, single parents working low wage jobs, the elderly living on social security

That sounds awesome but if you knew real addicts, you would know that food is not what they're buying and sorry but the kids come after feeding their addiction.

I worked at Walmart during grad school and saw people using FSs. Some were obviously addicts, but for the most part there were moms and kids just like any others. I'm willing to let a few addicts slide by to make sure the moms and kids who came through my line can eat.

After my parents first split my mom had to go on FSs. She hated every time she had to use them, but they were the difference between us eating or being hungry. I don't have a problem with FS and WIC, the good outweighs the bad.

So they fail the drug test and their food stamps are cut off. Then what happens to them? Drug addiction isn't something you can decide to just stop.

I was not talking about people taking care od foster kids I was talking about people that use drugs and don't want to work.

How can you tell if it's for foster kids or not? How do you know the person doesn't want to work? Are you involved in their lives?

No. You can't tell if it's for foster kids or not, nor can tell if the person doesn't want to work.

One of the best people I know has 2-4 foster kids at a time. She gets assistance for them. She drives a very nice minivan, paid for by her husband and his full time job. All the money they get (those big bucks there) for foster kids goes back into providing for those foster kids; she stockpiles clothes and shoes, has bought furniture for the bedrooms the kids use, school activities, etc. They foster because they can't have children, and they want to make a difference.

well then test the people that are abusing the system. you should only be able to get help for one year not the rest of your life. if I ran the system I would have a program where people have to take some type of college class or be in a program to help them find a better job. there has to be a better way to run this system.

ten years ago but my sister is a manager in a local grocery store now and that is how they still do it.

Perhaps in a smaller non-chain grocery store that hasn't upgraded their registers the eligible and non-eligible items still need to be separated, but the registers at practically every large chain can do the work for them.

That sounds nice. But how do pay for those college classes or work programs - because these programs cost money. And that money has to come from somewhere.

my thing is if they did this they would not have to be on the system. I would like to see people get jobs with my tax dollars not sit home and do nothing.

Where are these jobs that these people would get? Those $15 an hour McDonald's jobs? Those are going to be reduced. Companies want their profit, and using a tablet to order your food, and paying with a credit card is the way they are heading (look at Panera). Instead of having 4 in the grill, 3 in Drive thru, 3 cashiers and one fry/lobby, you'll now have 3 grill, 2 DT, 1 cash, and 1 fry/lobby. Bye bye to those 3 people who used to have jobs.

Or are you talking about those retail jobs? Like when they opened the new Walmart in our town. 10,000 people applied for 1,000 jobs.

So I make a six figure salary, pay a lot of taxes and fail a drug test. Now I'm on food stamps...

Should I keep my job? Man, addiction is tough to beat.

You do realize you can't just create jobs where there aren't any right?
I know here in new York you are put into a job program where they will help you find a job with the skills you have. and they will put you in a class at the local community college to better yourself. my thing is you also can't be picky about the type of job

Well, let me tell you my experience. I had a great office job for 31 years. I got downsized a year ago, because the industry I worked in is slowly dying. I had six months severance and six months unemployment. To continue getting the $420 a week (which was a fraction of the salary I was making when I got let go), I had to prove that I was looking for a job. And trust me, I applied to at least 15 jobs a week. A year later, unemployment's about to run out, and I still don't have a job. and that's with a college degree and experience. What the heck kind of job does someone without a degree and no experience get?
