Dropping cable???

We pay a ridiculously amount of money for cable TV that we do not watch and have cell phones so don't need our house phone either. Kids watch videos on their I-pads. Would love to save almost $200/mo by cancelling but how would we get wi-fi for our electronic devices?

Cable companies do offer just internet. They jack the price up on it however, since it would just be the internet. There's options out there though. Verizon and others have internet to compete with cable, but cable internet is probably the best way to go. So even if you were to drop the TV off and say only save half of that $200, you're still saving.

The only thing I honestly have my cable for is NHL hockey, which is out of season right now (I can't get my local team if I went to Dish or DirecTv, not to mention, where I currently reside, none of us are allowed to have satellite tv (complex)) and currently I watch movies on the Disney Channel and ABC Family. That's about it, unless there's a pressing weather issue, then I'll turn on the Weatherscan. I feel your pain every month. Not to the degree you do, but I wish the networks would put on better programming and such to make it worthwhile.

Cable and internet are 2 separate things. You can have one without the other. We dropped cable and our home phone a couple of months ago and went from paying $160 to $54.

Get an HD antennae for all your local channels. And most sports can be watched live streaming on the internet including the NHL.

We have internet only through Time Warner, and pay $40/month. We use voip for phone (voice over internet phone) ~$15/month, and then use hulu ($8/mo) and netflix ($8/mo). And we got a cheap antennae to pick up local channels.

You might price out internet service from your phone company. On average, this service is not as fast as internet from cable TV and satellite TV companies and will also require a land line, so check reviews of your phone company via Google and compare with reviews of your local cable and satellite companies.

My mechanic has 200 channels of cable TV in his waiting area because it was cheaper for him to bundle cable, phone and internet, instead of just the phone and internet he wanted.
It's a slippery slope for sure.
AT&T was on me for years to bundle my Internet with my Dish. Now they have switched to Direct, and Direct doesn't have the sports channel we most often watch. Glad I didn' bundle.

we just cut our cord. ended up having to pay $80 for internet. but i'll still take the savings. we did sign up for hulu, and got a roku box. I don't miss it a bit!!

I've been over two years without cable and it's been wonderful. Amazon Prime members also get free streaming video. Also PBS offers free shows thru their app which you can get on Roku. I currently have Clear for internet but Sprint bought them and the service will be ending in November. need to start looking for a new service.

We have wifi through our phone company. We have an antenna with a booster in the attic. We get over 50 channels, about 20 we like and watch. The only thing we really miss is ESPN but we can always watch those at family or friend's homes.

We dropped satellite a long time ago. We have high speed internet on a 2 year contract for $40/month including taxes. If we didn't want the contract it'd be $60/month

We have a high grade antenna sitting on our tv where we get about 30 free over the air channels.. This is how we watch most sports. We love college football and occasionally borrow a log in for ESPN over Internet or go to a friends house. This has been the best $30 we spent since dropping cable.

I called DirecTv to cancel, they dropped my bill from 115 to 69. Funny.... it was that easy. I have an Amazon Fire stick (one time price of $19) and use Hulu Plus $7 and Netflix $7.99. Once I find a way to watch The Walking Dead live, I am telling them to come pick their crapup! LOL! Seriously. We watch Disney, Hallmark, AMC and ABC. That's it. My internet is $42, I got rid of my landline in May. I was so scared, but I'm like, screw this extra $40 for nothing!

Can you recommend any specific sites to live stream NHL (specifically NY Rangers)? We will be getting rid of our cable very soon and I know DH will definitely miss his hockey and would be very happy to find out he can live stream the games!!!!

When I called TWC to cancel my cable they told me it would be the same price as internet-only to have internet plus the top 25 channels. I supplement that with Hulu and Netflix. Only thing missing is the channel the Reds games are on and AMC, but the money I get back every month not paying for all that hoopla is worth it. Every once in a while they send me a flyer asking if I want to upgrade to some package that costs $135++ and I'll get Starz for free, and I'm like.... NO.

You get just internet. DD just moved - she has cell and had no interest in wasting money on cable, as you say she streams netflix etc and watches at her leisure. She got internet only from AT&T, around $45 per month.
