I want to lessen my 11 day sept/oct trip by a day but the disney site is saying there are no similar room types (I would have to upgrade my room) available for the dates I want. How do I get around this without upgrading or am I out of luck?

You may be out of luck. Disney have put a stop to people booking and then dropping single ays on either side, which often left them with orphan room nights.

You can call, but they may not be able to help.

I believe Disney no longer allows you to just "drop" a day. It would be a new reservation. At least, those have been the majority of reports that we have been getting here over the last year or so.

Call them and ask them. I thought the same thing and when I called to ask they said they could do that. Now, to be fair, I didn't actually do it but they said it could be done. We did end up leaving early due to a family emergency and they did credit us for those 2 nights without any problem.

Call. It won't be a problem at all. I called last week right before my 30 day window and took at day off each end because of my flights. They had to put me through to Guest Services because of an "enhancement" in the system that has been giving people problems. They will be happy to help you that far out.

Its possible it wasn't a problem because the room was still available during your revised stay...i.e, if you were just booking today you could book that same resort/category/room for the new period of time you are staying.

They said you could, but you might not have been able to on a different day. It all depends on what is available.

It is not always possible. I had to upgrade when I needed to drop two days.

I was actually able to do this myself on MDE last month. I had booked a 4 night stay at the CR a and later decided I wanted to do 3 and it let me modify the reservation and drop the day myself.

As others have said, if the room type you have booked is not available for the shorter stay, you won't be able to modify your reservation without upgrading your room type. As a pp said, it used to be easy to drop nights, but Disney has changed that policy. Shorter stays must now be available as a new booking in order to take nights off. If you want to shorten your stay, you will have to upgrade your room type.

I did this not long ago myself.
We check in next Wednesday. About 2 weeks ago decided to move to Universal a day early so I called Disney to remove a day from our stay at WL
It did not require a new reservation (my reservation number did not change) and there were no rooms showing available on MDE for our dates so there is a way for them to do it
It did take a while, the CM at reservations said she had to contact someone else to do it, I forget now the name of the department she gave me
Will they do that every time? No idea. But they can. So it is worth a phone call. Nothing lost but your time

It is always worth a call, but you have to be prepared to modify what you already had booked. It frustrates me when posters insist it is possible based on Previous Disney policy because that policy has changed. They no longer simply "apply" a discount, or allow you to make changes in terms of length of stay and keep your discount unless they have that level of category in the inventory available. I would love that it was the same as the good old days, but Oh well.....

My only point was that even when inventory isn't available they can make it happen. If they want (this being the key here). They did for us. WL was sold out before and has been since, for the dates of our stay

Oh my goodness, Angie! I'm sorry, I was not clear. I did not mean you when I was talking, I just meant it is not as cut and dried as some make it out to be.

Oh, I got that. It's all good.
Mostly wanted to mention to any readers (both now and those who find this in a future search about changes) that even when a resort is sold out they can change your reservation, if they want to. It doesn't always take a new reservation to do it
It's never cut and dry, that's for sure.
Importantly, don't let a sold out resort prevent you from calling to inquire

I do think they have added this step/hoop to jump through to reduce some who want to change but decide not to since it takes an extra step
