Drop-off site for DCL Rome tour?

If you have taken the "tour your own" tour of Rome....where was your drop off/pick up site? At the Vatican or over by the Colosseum? Trying to decide what time to pre-order Vatican tickets.

Ummm..take the train in on your own don't pay disney a bunch of money when the train is something like 13 euros a person and you get use of the metro and such...there is a ton of info on this site about doing it this way...that is what i am doing..

with the train you can either get off roma s. pietro at the vatican first or go and do the colosessum first by getting off at roma termini...i know for two people we are able to rome easily for under 100 before lunch and souveniers

Just make sure if you take the train yourself that you allow TONS of time to get back to the ship. And bring a credit card with lots of credit on it. If you miss the ship... they will not wait for you and YOU will have to pay all expenses getting to the next port to catch up with the ship. & it's not covered by trip Ins.

We are doing Rome on our own and are planning on the 6pm train back and there are at least 4-5 trains after that one that will get us back in time....a lot of people have done it on their own and we were even told by CM on our last crusie to do it on our own...

just make a plan and stick to it....though warning whichever way you do it it will be tight getting to the vatican and the collesseum and such and alot of walking....

our plan: colosseum/roman forum/palantine hill, walk to piazza navona for lunch, trevi fountian, pantheon and then spanish steps....if we have time metro to vatican, if not train back to port

I've spent a few days in Rome on my own (not thru DCL) and found that you ALWAYS have to allow for extra time to walk around in Rome b/c you WILL get lost at least once or twice.

The streets are not marked as they are here--the street names are on signs which are nailed to/plaster on the walls of the buildings. Since the city is old, the streets wind and the maps (I've found) don't help much once you are walking around Pantheon, Trevi Fountain (i.e., City Center). It's pretty fun to get lost, but do allow extra time for it even if on the map it seems like short walk. I've circled Trevi Fountain 4 times once to find a Gelato place only 2 blocks away (it's those diagonal alleyways that get you).

Oh and, the metro stop to the Vatican is not close by the Vatican at all. You must walk at least 6 or 7 short blocks from the metro stop to the Vatican (15 minute walk).

The metro stop by the coliseum, forum area is very close to the coliseum itself.

The metro stop by the spanish steps exit at the bottom of the steps, although there is an elevator in the back of the station if you wish to take it. Spanish steps are 5 minutes from Trevi fountain.
