Hi,

We're getting a bit nervous about driving around Orlando. Has anyone got any tips or advice?

It's the first we've driven an automatic before, and I don't want the stress of it to ruin all the excitement! :scared:

Many years ago I was in the same predicament.
Arrived in the dark, never driven an automatic, didn't really know which way to go :scared1:
Many visits later, I find driving in Orlando, more enjoyable and far less stressful than driving in U.K.
Take your time, keep your distance from the car in front and I am sure that you will love it :thumbsup2

driving an automatic is sooooooooooooooooooo much easier than driving manual....

the biggest tip i'd give you - be sure to always look to the left before you pull out into the road...look left , right , left...

i have so many brits constantly pulling out in front of me when they're looking right instead of left.....look left, right , left....(as opposed to right, left, right)...

sounds silly, but really it makes a difference...

Hi there, have only driven there once before but have to say its not nearly as bad as you'd think!

At the time l was the only one old enough to hire the 8 seater van (21+ l think?) so didn't have much choice about it. Had never driven out of the UK, an automatic, or anything that big so l was a bit apprehensive to say the least :scared1:

The drive from the airport was pretty much enough to make me realise it's not that different, although l will admit to accidentally going on the wrong side of road once :lmao: Trust me if you do it once you wont do it again, be calm and don't panic if you do :)

Biggest tips l could give are:

Take it steady! As someone else said, make extra checks pulling out of junctions and unmarked crossroads.

Look out for road signs. A few times l found l just couldn't get over to the right lane in enough time, and if you miss your exit it's not as easy as it is here to correct yourself.

I'm due back again soon and again will be doing all the driving, this time just because no one else wants to. We've got a 15 seater van this time, so parking that should be fun!

Enjoy!

Thanks for the website and all the tips, really helpful.

I think i'll just have to get on with it, take my time and remain calm!

I've never driven but have always been the navigator.

DH says the driving is easy (I say the navigating is very stressful). As mentioned above keep an eye on the road signs as the sign and the exits are much closer to each other than over here. We've got lost on a number of occassions and have always managed to right ourselves eventually.

I also take it upon myself to be the speed check announcer and read out any speed restrictions I see as they seem to change very often.

If you've never driven an automatic before the one bit of advice I would give you is to keep your left foot tucked back out of the wayl! That way you will not accidentally slam your foot on the brakes thinking it's the clutch - just use your right foot.
The roads are fine and the cars are all easy to drive - you won't have a problem.

Driving in and around WDW is a pleasure. My advice is to be very observant of the speed restrictions. I have been stopped for speeding more times there than in the UK (never been fined though). :rolleyes1

definitely drive with a person riding shotgun (navigator)..
the signs in orlando are not the best (understatement), so you really need someone paying attention to the signs, while you're paying attention to the driving.....

i've made so many wrong turns - even where i've made them before - just because the signs are so bad....

if you do make a wrong turn, don't panic....keep going and eventually you'll be able to turn around and go the other way...
