Driving through Atlanta during rush hour

I did a search and there is some discussion about driving through on 75 vs taking 285 around, but nothing too current. So I'd like to ask the opinion of the Atlanta area residents or anyone who has driving it recently. AAA and Mapquest recommend the bypass, but I'm not sure that is best.

We will be driving through this coming Friday (6/8) arriving about 4 - 5 pm. I know, right in the middle of rush hour - absolute worst time to arrive. Well it can't be helped, so I just need to deal with it.

Given traffic at that time of day, and taking into account recent road construction, would you recommend the bypass or just staying on 75 straight through town?

We will be returning north the following Saturday - through town also about 4:00 pm. I assume on a Saturday staying on 75 is generally the best bet.

Thanks for any advise you can give me.

Jeff

Jeff, I live south of metro ATL and all I can say is pack your patience :scared1: Driving thru downtown ATL on a Friday after 3:00 pm is :scared1: :scared1: . 285 is baad as well but nothing like downtown, and if a Braves game is going on it will last longer. If you can press your time and come before 3:00 than take 75, if not take the bypass.

On the Sat return I would stay on 75. You should be fine.

I don't know what your trip plans are, but I would gnaw off my right arm before I would electively drive through downtown Atlanta on a Friday afternoon at rush hour during baseball season!! If you cannot leave home earlier or later I guess I would take the bypass, but it can be pretty horrid too. If it cannot be avoided add 2 hours to your trip time, empty your bladder before hitting town and pack a picnic dinner!!

I second this. And it seems our drivers are getting worse if that's possible.

I take the 285 bypass West about one morning a week during rush hour and it's not usually bad at all so I would recommend the bypass.

Now, in all cases (coming back and going) READ those flashing signs. If they tell you the interstate is closed or there is construction beliieve them.... and go the other route LOL!

The only problem with 75 on Saturday might be construction. You can check this site for updates.
