Hello all

We're driving home to Ontario (going to try the "non-I-75 route") and I'm looking for any suggestions for good places to stop on the first night. We are planning on taking 2 days to get back - so I want to do about 11 or 12 hours the first day.

According to Google maps - Beckley, West Virginia is about 11.5 hours from here.

Any suggestions for that first night? Help??

:confused3

The Fairfield Inn Beckley has the best reviews on tripadvisor. Seems inexpensive as well. Right off the hwy: 125 Hylton Lane, Beckley, WV 25801

The Fairfield is pretty popular. Yes, Beckley is approx the half way mark. There are lots of places on each end of the US19.

We usually go a little farther to the PA state border and stay there. I would rather make the first day as long as possible. I could never manage two 12 hour days.

what we have done in the past is squeeze the very last out of the vacation.
on the day we check out we pack the car check out (of riverside) park the car and catch a bus to the kingdom for one last blast of fun. We go back to the car and head out around noon. Five hours drive gets you to walterboro sc. plenty of good hotels. Next day is about eight hours to Fairmont WV. There is a wonderful Super 8 there and I mean wonderfull, check it out on trip advisor. From Fairmont to one hour north of Toronto is about 8 hours. the drive through wv and va is beautiful and easy. the border crossing is through buffalo. we have driven this route for 11 years to fl and the carolinas and find it the best and fastest. I75 is busy and boring and the bridge in detroit is a construction mess. was there in jan. will not go back till it's finished.
have fun hope this helps

We took 2 nights, as we have toddler/baby, and we wanted to stop and sightsee/visit things.

The Holiday Inn Express in Beckley was amazing, brand new with really nice beds/rooms and a nice indoor pool, but no free breakfast (had fresh fruit/coffee on the counter for free and a restaurant that charged $). Spent about $100 on the room, but didn't use any coupons so you could get it cheaper probably. On the way home we stayed in Beckley at the Country Inn and Suites - got a better deal $90 for a 1 bedroom suite with free cont. breakfast, but the food was bad the pool was only okay, and the room was just okay - clean, nice but nothing to get excited about.

Used our Aeroplan points to stay in Savannah, GA - the Westin on the harbour was phenomenal, the view was to die for of the Savannah waterfront, really nice city to visit, so was St Augustine.

Used our Marriott points to stay at the Fairfield in Atlanta, nice but nothing exciting, Atlanta is an amazing city to stop in if you go up I-75, the world's largest aquarium is there - really worth a stop (they have whale sharks!) and the zoo is really nice (they have pandas inc a baby!) We also did the CNN tour, and the COca-Cola world tour, both good. We also went to the Stone mountain which was excellent (carving in mountain like at Rushmore with laser show/fireworks, and a small amusement park).

We got creative on the way home and cut through the mountains between Georgia and Virginia, using I-75 to Atlanta and then the Smokey Mountains(beautiful country, one of the nicest drives we've ever done!) and then cutting over to other route through Beckley. If you have an extra day would highly recommend it!
