Is there any other way to get from WDW to US without taking the interstate? Back roads, shortcuts- any suggestions?

Yes, it's VERY easy to avoid I-4. Do you know where Palm Parkway is?

If you drive east past DTD and head towards Crossroads Plaza via Hotel Plaza Blvd, you'll be headed the correct way. Turn left to go north on SR 535 and go one traffic light and that will be Palm Parkway. Turn right and go east again. Follow Palm Parkway past all the hotels. It eventually runs parallel and directly next to I-4 and makes the curve from eastbound to northbound. It changes names from Palm Parkway to Turkey Lake Road. You'll eventually get to the intersection with Sand Lake Road. Continue straight through north. A couple traffic lights up you'll come to Hollywood Blvd at Universal. Turn right and that will lead you directly into the Universal parking garages.

Thanks Kingbobofthenorth! That is exactly what I was looking for! Do you think that would be the way to go in early June? I'm thinking of the possible traffic jams since the WWoHP will be opening mid-June.

It's really hard to say. If you're going first thing in the morning you'll avoid the Orlando-bound commuters on I-4 too by staying off it. Certainly Palm Parkway/Turkey Lake Road (which is a 4-lane road) will have fewer cars on it and it does offer a back way into Universal. Don't think you can go wrong by using it.
