I need your advice. We are driving from suburban Philly to Ft. Wilderness, leaving December 22nd. We're planning to stop overnight - probably South of the Border or somewhere not far from that (never been there, want to see just how tacky it is :rolleyes1 ).

Here's the tough part - our chihuahua has become very "needy" in the last few weeks - big separation issues. :guilty: We were planning on boarding her at our vet's along with our norwegian elkhound, as we did for a week in August and over Christmas last year. However, she lost a lot of weight during the August stay (in spite of the excellent care from the vet, who did everything but feed her intraveneously) because she refused to eat. Since we don't start back until January 2nd, we are considering taking her.

Not a problem while we stay, since she loves our camper, but what do we do on the overnight down and back? Does anybody know of any pet-friendly areas or hotels along I-95 around SotB or even a little further south?

All recommendations welcome. I have the AAA guide to pet travelling but I don't know "where" to look, and SotB is definitely not listed.

Thanks in advance.

I should tell you that on Mapquest it only had Florence as 9.5 hours from home but we hit slow moving traffic from Maryland thru the top half of NC. It was awful.

Pet Friendly is a great website. There are one or two chains that accept most pets, but I can't remember their names just now. You're lucky she is a tiny dog; some of them get antsy about larger dogs. In my experience the tiny dogs are sometimes the "barkiest", but I digress..... :)

I know what you mean by a needy chihuahua. Mine passed on 2 years ago and she had the same issues. I never took her to Florida, but we did take her to upstate NY for a long weekend/family wedding and she did pretty well. She was an old gal and just needed to be around familiar people all of the time. And she had some ongoing health issues that made her care somewhat challenging for others than her family. We stayed at a Holiday Inn in the Lake Geneva, NY area and they were great with her; I don't think all Holiday Inns accept pets, though. Good luck!

petswelcome.com is another web site I've seen that lists pet friendly hotels.

Many thanks to all of you, I'll be checking these out later today/tonight. We do still have her reservation at the vet's, just in case I couldn't find anything.

Are you traveling with the camper? Sob (their term, not mine lol) has a decent campround and you can use all the motel facilities. By the way we like staying there.

Ha! Do I understand where you're coming from! Note the Pug in the pic below :rolleyes1 :pug: . We also drive from PA and she goes with us every trip. We don't stop at SOB, though. We (usually) stop at the Quality Inn in St George, SC on the way down. It is a bit further south than SOB. On the way back we stop at the Quality Inn & Suites in Lumberton, NC. I make the reservations online before we go because I don't want any unpleasant surprises.

Have a wonderful and safe trip!

Hi. I'm in Bensalem just to the North of Philly. When we drove down we hit Florence, SC at or around the 12 hour mark. There are alot of hotels in that area. Here is a list of Pet friendly ones

Used the site you suggested and we are reserved at Red Roof Inn for trip down on 12/22 and return 1/2. Thanks for the site - now we can cancel the little dog's reservation and not worry.

(We are between Philly and Lancaster, about 45 minutes north of 95 at Cecil County, MD. When we went to Williamsburg in August, had same traffic problems between DC and Richmond - hope we miss those!!)
