Driving from NJ

We plan on leaving NJ around 6am on a Saturday 9/9. Do you think that'll give us time to avoid alot of the traffic in the DC area? My father in law wants to leave from his house in PA to take 83. We were considering taking 81, but it seems to be so far out of the way to reconnect back into Richmond onto 95.

We live in Central NJ, so we can take Rte 31 onto 95 or some back road onto the turnpike to exit 9.

Any suggestions?

Hello fellow Jerseyan! My FFIL always leaves at 6am to avoid the DC traffic...and he does! To boot, he's leaving from Northern NJ so it would be like you leaving at 6:30am so you should be good.

Isn't that DC traffic the pits?

Leaving on a Saturday, you will avoid the normal rush hour traffic. Pretty much any time you leave, you should be fine.

Hello New Jerseyans,

I am considering driving to Disney at the end of May. I have never driven any farther South than Atlanta. The airline fares and the cost of the car rental have given me a driving option to try. I live in southern Jersey, and just wondered if there is a quicker route than 95. I put in the coordinates on Mapquest, and it says it takes 16 hours. I am truly not looking forward to the Jersey to Richmond, VA stretch. The drive is usually not bad once you get to the North Carolina border. I am contemplating whether this drive is worth the extra time, but having a large SUV will allow me to take and bring back everything I want. Just wondering if the time estimate is off. Anyone from Jersey have a better route or suggestions?

I'm with cranbiz -- a Saturday after the main summer travel season has ended shouldn't be too bad around DC.

The Washington Nationals are out of town, and the Baltimore Orioles have a 4:30 home game. If you can get through Baltimore before the game traffic (they're playing the Yankees, so it's bound to be sold out), you should be fine.

Hi! I am new to these boards and so far I have found a lot of helpful infomation.

I am also from NJ and planning on driving down in the beginning of December of this year. My FH is afraid to fly, so we are meeting the rest of my family down there on 12/3. What is everyone's advice as to when to leave to get there on 12/3 mid-afternoon without being exhausted.
