hi all
we drive to orlando every year form nw nj
normally we hop on rt31 south toward trenton- cross over onto the pa turnpike around philly and hop on 95 south.

i've been told by 2 friends that they actually drive into pa toward harrisburg hop onto 81s and drive thru nv and end up in virginia around winchester.

they take this route because they bypass philly, baltimore and dc traffic-that is doesn't take any longer - because they miss the traffic thru all the major cities.

we are planning on leaving at about 11 am on fri( kids have half day).
if we take this new route we should be at harrisburg by 1:30.
we are only planning on driving till about 6pm that evening.
any one with
experience
driving from harrisburg- can give us an idea how far we will get

and anyone else have route ideas from warren co nj

TIA

We drive from Hunterdon so not that far from you. We have done it a few different ways.
We've gone over to PA taken 611 to tpk and then Blue Route 476 south till 95 the 476 takes you about 10-15 min to get to Delaware and then straight shot down. ETA 17 hours

We've also taken 29 from Frenchtown to 95 and down but that takes you right through Philly

We drive straight through and leave around midnight and eat breakfast usually in North Carolina it's about 7 hours.

Good luck!!

hi looked at the map
and i can take 78w to 476 to 95s

can't tell from the map
but will this save me from philly traffic????

If you take I95S you will hit DC traffic. If my thinking is right at rush hours here. The other way may be longer, but might be easier stress wise. Rush hour here is several hours long. I81 does go well west of DC. I know from taking my DS years ago to VA Tech that you can go down and either go across in NC to I85 to Atlanta then I75 to Orlando area, or take I81 and some other Interstate to I75 through Atlanta to Orlando area. I do not have an atlas with me to check for you. I hope this helps. Have a great and safe trip. pirate:

thanks for your replies

i'm leaning toward taking 78 to81 to77 to26 to i95 ( catch it in south carolina)

does anyone know the eta from warren co nj taking this route

or from harrisburg pa ( i'm 2 1/2 hrs from there)

TIA :Pinkbounc :teleport: :cool1:

This is the route I'm thinking of taking (coming from S Bergen Co)... So I am eager to know the answer also.

BTW - yahoo says it takes almost 15 hours (14hr 45min) from Harrisburg, PA to Orlando

2hr 30 min to Harrisburg from my house.. for me from my town it will 16hr 15mintotal ...
So I clocked my town to Orlando and it is 16hr 11min so it MAY be worth going out through Harrisburg.

Mileage wise is not that bad either
Going to WDW VIA Harrisburg = 1133 miles
Going to WDW VIA Rt 95 (all the way) = 1085
So it is an extra 48 miles but maybe less hassle.

I don't think you'll hit rush hour traffic! If you're in the Trenton area around 11:00 a.m., you'll be passing by downtown Philadelphia on I-95 around Noon. That means you'll be passing through Baltimore around 2:00 or 2:15 p.m. and DC around 3:00 or 3:15 p.m. Around 3:30 p.m. in the DC area, traffic might thicken a little but it won't be rush hour just yet.

I think you'll be fine taking this direct route, because you are luckily threading the needle between morning and evening rush hours.

This won't save you from rush hour traffic. You'll just be rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

At I-78, I-476 is the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike, a toll road. Once you reach the outer Philly suburbs, I-476 is no longer a toll road, and is known locally as "The Blue Route," which connects the Turnpike to I-95 just south of Philadelphia.

The Blue Route can be a horrible traffic nightmare during rush hour. And when it empties into I-95 south (during rush hour) you'll still have a lot of commuter traffic thanks to people who work in Philly but live in Chester County, Delaware County, and the state of Delaware.

I wouldn't choose that route during rush hour.

However, I suspect the above route, if you HAD to take it during rush hour, would be MUCH better during morning rush than during evening rush.

We drive a motorhome from NH and have taken several routes in search of a route with the least traffic and shortest route.

We leave NH around noon on a Friday and arrive at Fort Wilderness around 9pm on Saturday. This includes gas stops/food stops and a 4-5 hour sleep stop.

We take I287 to the NJ turnpike (to avoid GW bridge). From the Jersey turnpike we go over the Deleware Memorial Bridge, then get on Route 301 all the way to Carmel Church, VA where we pick up I95 again. We are usually on Route 301 around 10pm so we miss the Annapolis traffic.

We have gone I81 to Harrisburg to I66 (warren county) and got on I95 around Fredericksburg, VA. This route adds 150 miles to our trip.

We have also gone the DC route. We hit that area around 11pm and the traffic was bad.....not fun in a motorhome.

We've also taken Route 13 down through Norfolk, va, to I64 to Emporia, VA. It's a nice route but long.

Of all the routes we prefer Route 301. My mother took 301 and complained about the traffic in Annapolis as she hit afternoon traffic.

I think timing is key.

Hope this helps

If you do take the route utilizing I-81, just be prepared to battle the trucks the entire way. More trucks on that road than anywhere I've ever seen. It's an up and down road, and when the trucks are going down--they're FLYING. It's not fun trying to get out of the way of a tractor -trailer going down hill at 70+ MPH--.
