If you drive from a long distance, I want to share with you how one company saved our trip! (WARNING: you may think what I talk about is gross, DS getting sick)

On Friday Nov. 19th, we started our road trip around 12:30pm. All was good. I had bought the movie Grownups for the kids to watch, and they started watching it about an hour into our drive. My 10yo DS was really enjoying it. He was laughing so hard at some parts. He is a very good traveler. He hardly sleeps, but he is usually very happy and excited when we take our long drive to WDW.

We left CT and crossed in NY, my 10yo started to whine a little. He asked if I could turn the AC on in the back because he was hot, he wanted to switch seats with his sister because his didn't recline back all the way and he wanted to lay down. I looked at him from the reaview mirror, and saw his face was not looking good. I told my DH I think he was getting car sick. Sure enough, he yells he is going to throw up. I pull over and we get him out of the car. DH took him to the edge of some woods, he coughed a bit, and really tried, but nothing would come up. Back in the van he went. He tried to sleep, but the poor kid was just so uncomfortable.

We are now in rush hour traffic in NYC, about a half hour later. There is absolutely NOWHERE to pull over. I hear my oldest DS yell "He's puking!". Yup...he just leaned right over and threw up on the floor and anything that was sitting on the floor. There was literally nothing I could do at the moment. It felt like forever when I finally could get off the highway to clean him and the van up. We took some plastic bags from the grocery pile in the back and told him if he needed to get sick again, to throw up in the bag. Problem? After the first episode when all of the solids came up, what is left is liquid. So, he throws again, but it is liquid, and the bag leaked. So I need to pull over again,(it took some time) while the bag is pouring out.

At this point you can imagine the stink in the car.

We manage to get to a rest stop in NJ and we were able to get a whole bunch of sturdy plastic bags. That is what the poor guy used for the rest of the night, because yes, he threw up all the way to WDW. He slept off and on, but pretty much every 30 minutes, something was trying to come up.

I know this is a gross story, but if you drive, you need to hear it, because I want to give you the name of a company that may come in handy for you someday.

Saturday morning, I called ahead to AKV where we were staying and asked if they knew of a car detail company that would come out to us and clean the carpet. She could not tell me off hand of any company, but she did google and came up with quite a few in the Orlando area. The 1st company I called quoted me $80. YIKES. I just wanted the carpet cleaned. I wasn't looking for a full detail. But yes, that was what it would cost for just the carpet.

I called the next company and I got a very nice man who said it would cost $25 for them to come out to AKV and clean the carpet. He was booked the rest of Saturday, but since we got it cleaned up, and we weren't going to use the van once it was parked, I told him Monday morning was fine. He called me at 7am Monday morning to tell me that 2 men were on their way to us. DH got up and met them with the van near the recreation area of Kidani Village. (tennis courts and basketball hoops.) I was thinking they would just clean the area DS was in, because in my mind all I cared about, was getting the stink out of the van. Later that day, we got in the van and I saw that the entire carpet had been cleaned! Front as well as back. DH said the boss even came out to check on them, and he was hounding them to scrub some old candy or something up. We bought the van used last year from a private seller and the carpet was pretty stained. I couldn't believe how clean the carpet was!!!! All for $25. DH tipped them $10. So for $35 we had a fresh, clean van with no throw up stink in it!!!!

I can't say enough about how this company saved our trip back home. I couldn't imagine driving back home with the stink in the van.

I also want to say how impressed I was with AKV. She not only helped me find a company to clean the van, but she made sure our room was ready when we arrived at 1PM. Poor DS needed a shower and a bed ASAP. She told me over the phone she could not check me in over the phone, but I needed to explain our situation to the person at the front desk, and if our room was not ready, to ask them to call housekeeping to put a "rush" on the room. I was hoping that would not be the case, because even with a rush, it would still take time, and poor DS just needed a solid bed. He had a fever at this point, so it was not car sickness. We arrived and checked in, and was told our room was ready! HALLELUAH!!! Doped DS up with tylenol, got him in the shower and he was sleeping by 2PM.

Anyway, the name of the company is called Car Finesse. PM me for their phone number. Anyone who travels and has a chance of car sickness or just a bug, you should have this number with you.

We always carry a bottle of Benadryl as recommended by DS Pediatrician. DS is prone to car sickness. We open a window, let him hang his head out - and he feels better, then the Benadryl kicks in.

Thanks for the detailing tip - a lot cheaper than the Boston area!!!!

Oh my goodness! Your poor DS!!! And poor you! That must have been an awful experience! I hope he got better quickly! It's great that you received such wonderful service!

Oh, I feel your DS's pain! The same thing happened to me on the way home from our last trip in Feb. and it was awful! I literally vomitted every hour from Florida to Maryland, then it got a little better. I kept dozing off and when I opened my eyes I would start puking. I actually had a stomach virus because I was running a low grade temp and was not well for a couple of days after we arrived home. I was absolutely fine when we left Disney but shortly after that I went downhill fast! I had to wash my hair in a gas station bathroom because the first time I vomitted DH pulled over to the side of the road and I jumped out but, didn't have time to tie my hair back (I have long hair past my mid back), the wind was blowing and you you guessed it, as I was puking my hair blew in my face. I also brushed my teeth in many many rest area/ gas station bathrooms. Then the highlight of that awful return trip....I had to change my clothes in the gas station bathroom because I pee'ed my pants! I was vomitting so violently that one time i just wet my pants! DH wanted to stop over at a hotel but, I just wanted to go home into my own bed. Thankfully we always carry a box of small garbage bags on road trips (DD14 sometimes gets car sick). I think I used the entire box!
We have never had anything happen like that on road trips so I guess our luck ran out. I am just happy that it was me and not one of the kids.
We are currently tossing around the idea of another trip to Disney either in August or November and we will be driving!

I try to keep a few gallon size ziplock bags in the car in case someone gets sick. At least you can seal them up in case you can't pull over right away. On our last trip, I got a migraine while we were at World Showcase. By the time I got across the park I felt really awful. We got a cab back to OKW and I got sick in the cab. Luckily I had a gallon ziplock bag so the cab interior was ok, but I was embarrassed and felt bad for the cab driver. My sister tipped him well. When you are sick, it seems like every mile feels like ten miles.

My dd used to get car sick a lot and we perfected a method for containing it (yeah, yeah, gross topic, haha).

Instead of bags which can leak, we carried yogurt tubs in the car. Of course, you could also use sour cream, cottage cheese containers, whatever. We used the larger ones, I think they hold 32 oz. Easy to puke into (you don't have to hold the top of the bag open) and when finished, just pop the lid on. Toss at the next stop.

Great tip about the car cleaning service though, makes me wish we had our car at WDW so I could get the carpet cleaned so cheaply! Well, almost....i prefer flying and getting a rental car! ;)

Next time, or for those eavesdropping, have him fast for the next 12 hours other than drinking plain water. If at any time he feels nauseous, the 12 hours starts over again.

The downfall of meal plans is that someone may get sick and be unable to or should not eat.

Also carry bottles of water. Rinse out your mouth after vomiting. Vomitus rots the teeth due to the stomach acid it contains. (So does pineapple juice and a variety of other things). I will sanction spitting it out the window under these circumstances.

My older brother was always apprehensive about sitting next to me in the car ever since I was 3 years old and stuffed myself with cake frosting at Uncles house and on the way home got carsick. And for many years thereafter I cut off the frosting before eating cake.

You have a "sick bag". Put some papers in the bag to absorb any liquid. Old newspapers. Even a couple of handfuls of paper towels or napkins.

Oh my! How was your son for the rest of the vacation, and how was the trip home?

Thanks for the tip! I could smell your car while sitting here at the computer. We still have fresh memories of DD sitting in the backseat saying, "I don't feel well". Moments later our car's carpeting didn't look so good, either. However, we only smelled it for 15 minutes, not hour after hour, state after state. I really feel for you and your family!
