Driving from Dallas to Orlando

DH and I have a room booked for December 22-27 on a last minute thing. We cannot find affordable airfare anywhere! We are thinking of driving instead because we don't want to have to cancel.

Anyone have a good route to take? Estimated time? Google Maps puts it at about 17 hours.

In my opinion you should drop down to I-10 as early in your journey as possible in order to maximize warmer weather and reduce the likilhood of snow or sleet on the drive down. While that could happen even along the Gulf Coast, it's highly unlikely. Not so along the I-20 corridor where winter weather is more likely. If winter weather is not in the forcast on your departure day, I'd do I-20 east to I-49 south to I-10 east, bypassing Houston completely.

I usually drive to Shreveport then drop down thru Alexandria...depending on the weather. It's a long drive...I drive to Jacksonville, spend the night and go on the next day.

I think the time estimate is totally unreasonable! We drove from Houston, which is about 100 miles less of a drive according to Mapquest, and it took us longer than 17 hours. At about 1100 miles, that would be an average of 65 miles an hour. And this is with no stops for gas, lunch, etc. No way is that reasonable! So, it will take longer. But, it's still not too bad. We broke the drive up into 2/3 of distance first day and 1/3 second which put us stopping in Marianna, FL the way there, and north of New Orleans on the way back. Good luck with finding your info!

We drove Tampa to Dallas and it was more like 22 hours. I don't think 17 is accurate at all! I would keep watching the airfares!

How "reasonable" are you talking? Airtran has your dates for $208 to MCO and $168 back with oone stopover each way...that's $376 pp + tax. (www.airtran.com)

Southwest has one flight left on Dec 22 for $168 pp and 3 returning for $168 pp, plus taxes. That's $336 pp, plus tax, with one stopover each way flying out of Love Field.

Those are two I found, anyway.
