What is the best way to avoid NYC and Washington traffic? Someone told me 81 through the Poconos in PA is a better route, but it adds about an hour to the trip. Any hints? TIA

That would be the best way to go. But if you are in New England, you can also just take 84 to 684 over the Tappan Zee and stay on 287 until you reach 78. That will take you to Harrisburg, PA where you can jump on 81.

If you look on google maps, it looks like it cuts off a few miles over taking 84 all the way to PA and then 81. This route you jump on 81 much further south in PA.

Hope this helps!

I was going to suggest the Tappan Zee. Also, if you take 81 to 83 and pickup 15 in Harrisburg, you can follow 15 into VA and then take 267 (it's a toll road) to the Fairfax County Parkway. Then, follow the signs to 95 south. The Lorton exit is like 2 exits. Not advisable during rush hour, but during slow times it's fine.
