Drive Like The Wind, Bullseye!!

INTRO

Hello everyone!!

We are home from another fabulous Spring Break Disney Trip. As usual, we had a great time and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

Here is the Who, What, Why and Where …..

Who:

Crane family

Me – my name is Susan. 49 years old. Irrigation designer and seamstress. I am the main Disney fanatic of this group with DD as a close second. I am basically the most unphotogenic person alive, so I don’t have a lot of photos of myself. Here is proof.

DH – his name is Jerry. He turned 64 on this trip. He is in management at a Chemical company. He acts like going on these trips is the worst thing ever, but once we get there he always has a great time. I just have to get him in the right mindset to go.

DS and the girlfriend. DS is 17 and will be 18 soon and the GF is 18. I will mostly refer to them as the big kids and they pretty much did their own thing while on this trip. They would meet up with us for dinners and things, but otherwise, they had their own fast passes and even a table service or two all to themselves. They seemed to enjoy themselves.

DD – Her name is Hannah and she is 14. On this trip she took a lot of her own photos and I will share them with you as they are much better than mine. She took some great ones. She was allowed more freedom during this trip. She stayed in the same park as us, but was allowed to venture off on her own for a short while to explore what she wanted and we will see that in her photos. This goofy girl. Most of the time it is tough to get good photos of her. Here is a decent one

But most of the time, I get this.

What and Why: Spring Break Disney Trip. This is something we have been doing every year since 2009. It is always busy during Spring Break, but it really is the best time for our family to go. With the kids’ school schedules and work schedules, it is just almost always the perfect time. We just pack our patience expecting large crowds and go with the flow. We have lived in South Carolina for decades and due to a recent change in my husband’s career, we now live in Corpus Christi, Texas. DH is starting up a chemical plant here and he has been working a lot and has been under a lot of stress. He tried to get me to cancel the trip, but I refused. I needed it and so did he. He was worried that the start up schedule for the new plant would interfere with our trip, but at just 19 days before we left – WHEW!! – he was cleared to go. Thank goodness there was a construction delay in the project. DH really needed to get away, so we were all so happy that he could come.

Where: We are DVC members, so this time we were able to snag a 1 bedroom villa at Bay Lake Tower. We LOVED this resort and the convenience to Magic Kingdom allowed the kids to head over to there almost every night on their own and close down the park and then have an easy walk back to the resort.

Since we just bought a (very lovely) brand new house, DH refused to allow me to spend even more money on plane tickets and insisted upon driving. From South Carolina, it was an easy 7-8 hours. From Corpus Christi, Texas, google maps said it was 16-17 hours, but with traffic and stops it was more like 19 - UGH.

DH drove straight through on the way there and on the way back. He used to work shift work, so staying up all night driving is something that isn’t too difficult for him. I’m still super impressed by it. When we moved here, I had to stop and spend the night on the way. I just couldn’t do the drive straight through. Thus, the trip report name – Drive Like The Wind Bullseye. It was a long drive and it was agonizing at times, but I would do it again to visit our happy place. Haha – I will push harder for plane tickets next time though.

I booked this trip at 7 months out when we had just moved here to Texas and I found out the dates for Spring Break when I registered the kids for their new schools. We sold our house last April and we were given 3 weeks to move out as the new owners needed to be in the house by April 28, 2016. DH had already been living in Texas for several months already, so I was dealing with everything. Renovating the house, getting it on the market, dealing with my own job and two sullen teenagers who were NOT happy about moving halfway across the country.

After we sold our house we had 6 weeks remaining in the school year, so the kids and I moved in with my wonderful sister until school was over. We shipped all of our stuff to Texas where DH had an apartment for us that we would live in while our new house was being built. We left for Texas when the kids got out of school and finally moved in to our new house in August, 2016. So, we lived in FOUR different places last year and we ALL needed a fun vacation. The kind of vacation that being in the Disney bubble provides.

We purchased the dining plan and I will be doing a dining report as well. I will post links to it here so you see what and where we ate.

I hope you all will follow along on our adventures and please do stop in and say hello if you can!!

First up - The much maligned Chef Mickey's and breakfast at Contempo Cafe!!

Chef Mickeys

I see a lot of negative reviews of Chef Mickey’s but we liked it. After a long drive with a group of people with varying tastes, it was just the thing.

We were all starving and no one was in the mood for a photo, so we just got a buzzer from the hostess stand and sat down for a few minutes for them to call us to be seated.

DD wanted this ADR because she loves buffets. I’m sorry, but I don’t take photos of buffet meals. I find glops of food dumped on a plate unappealing. I promise I got photos of our QS and other table service meals. Because really, let’s admit. We are all here for the food porn.

Everyone got something good to eat, we saw some characters, enjoyed watching the other families take photos. It was a busy chaotic place. But a happy one. The big kids scarfed and took off for the Magic Kingdom, while DD, DH and I took a little more time.

DD and I hit up Magic Kingdom afterwards, but DH went back to the room since he was exhausted from the drive.

The next morning, I got up and walked over to the

They have a little unconventional system here where you pay for your food first and then you get a buzzer and they bring your food to you.

I got ours to go.

DH and I split the bounty platter

Bounty Platter - Scrambled Eggs with shredded cheddar, Bacon, Turkey Sausage, Breakfast Potatoes, French Toast, and seasonal fruit $11.49

This was plenty of food for us to start our first full day.

I got DD and Danish to get her started.

We left the big kids to their own devices and headed out to Magic Kingdom.

Joining! Every year I contemplate talking DH into a spring break trip, but it's yet to happen

But most of the time, I get this.
LOL! I love the picture; I'm laughing because I get 3 pictures of younger DS like this before I have to beg him for a "good" one.

Disney danish is the best way to start a day :thumbsup2
Looking forward to reading more!

Welcome!!

We thought that since Texas' Spring Break was earlier than the ones we experienced in South Carolina, then it might not be as crowded. Boy, were we wrong. But we were ready for it and I sort of like the energy the crowd provides in the parks.

Yeah - I can never get a decent photo. I always get a silly face or a tongue out any more.

DD swears by a Disney danish. She had several of these on our trip. They were very delicious!!

Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to say hello!!

Hey Susan! Can't wait to hear about your trip. That's so nice that you could all take a break from your crazy hectic schedules, although IDK if I could do 19 hours lol.

YIKES.. That sounds insane!!!

You definitely needed the vaca, lol! Where did you live in SC? We just moved from PA to Charlotte, so we went from about 16 hours away (plane rides) to 8 hours (car rides). Since Charlotte is so close to the border we're actually moving to SC this spring but we'll be super close to the NC border.

Great start so far!

Hey Vernie!! Welcome!!

Yeah - 19 hours was pretty brutal. But I would do it again for a week at Disney. This first week back has been such a rough adjustment from my happy place. I'm ready to go back already. DD was asking when our next trip was going to be. And I'm sad that I don't know. Hopefully next year.

It WAS insane. I'm glad it is all over. It was a rough year. All of the moving from this place to that. It was horrible.

We lived in Columbia. YAY for a 8 hour drive over a 16 hour one. That was one of the good things about living in SC. Half a day and you are at Disney. DH would drive at night and he would consistently make it in under 7 hours. Charlotte is a beautiful area and so is upper SC. Which town are you moving to? You will love it there. I miss SC so much!! Except the pine pollen. I'm not missing that at all.

At least you are settled now! Hopefully another WDW trip is in your future :)

We will be in Indian Land which is very close to Fort Mill, and Rock Hill isn't too far away. So we're probably 35-40 mins outside of Charlotte. We wanted to buy and unfortunately the Charlotte metro is pretty expensive, and my husband works south of the city anyways, so we landed in SC. I definitely love the shorter drive! We drove from PA as kids so it was always like a 2 day event. I need to get my husband to drive overnight, right now we're on a kick of driving CLT to Jacksonville, spending the night, and doing 2 hours the next day. Doesn't hurt because we leave after work and get there by like 10, and then we're in the parks by like 10-11 the next morning, but I almost want to just get the rest of the way to WDW and be done with it!

I have a coworker (I still work for a Landscape Architect in South Carolina) that will be moving to the Rock Hill area. His wife just finished medical school with a ophthalmologist degree and she signed with a practice there. He showed me the house they bought and it looks like a lovely area.

Yes, I would rather just drive straight through. Let's just get there already. 19 hours was A LOT though.

Any chance you remember what kind of kid friendly offerings there were at Chef Mickey's? I had read someone say the kid buffet choices had been cut down a lot.

Hey shurley!!

Thanks so much for stopping by!!

That is the beauty of the Disney buffet. They have something for everyone. I think my daughter is one of the pickiest kids on the planet, but she had plenty to eat at Chef Mickey's - she mainly ate mac n cheese. I didn't notice that they had cut back, personally.

Thanks! I think I had read that like Mac and Cheese, etc was gone. That all they had for "kid food" was chicken tenders, which is the one food most of my kids wouldn't eat! I'm glad to read something good about the place, it's somewhere my kids always want to go!

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't remember seeing chicken tenders on that buffet. I think my daughter got a baked chicken leg. They have good rolls and potoates and green beans. We had plenty to eat and we enjoyed it. It was just the thing after a long car ride. Just blindly graze the buffet and not have to think about anything or wait for your food. I hope you get a ressie and enjoy your meal there. I mean if you are an ultra foodie, I can see where this wouldn't be the place for you. But if you are looking for a an all American Buffet with simple, good food and fun characters? This is right up your alley.
