Drinking age

I've heard that the drinking age goes from 21 to 18 when out at sea and at the islands. Is this true?

Nope....on DCL anytime you are onboard the drinking age is 21. Some of the ports have drinking ages of 18 but on ship you must be 21.

I know Nassau, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, St. Maarten, St. Thomas are all 18. Key West, & Castaway Cay are all 21.

DCL will card you at their clubs/bars if they feel you are underage. I have seen it happen. You must provide your birthdate when you make a reservation and it must match your Birth Certificate or passport so there is no way to "fool" DCL. Your birthyear is printed on your KTTW card so your age is in the system. Also I believe there is something that says you are under 21 on your KTTW as well.

I was surprised that the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Thomas was 18, but I just checked online and it says all U.S. Virgin islands drinking age is 18 to consume on the island. But, you cannot leave the island with alcohol unless you are 21.

Correct! DD served alcohol for Disney for 3 years before being "legally" allowed to DRINK IT! Seems odd that you can marry, drive and smoke, but not indulge in a glass of wine before 21yrs of age!Nat

We saw a lot of kids in the evening in Cozumel who were obviously taking advantage of the lower age. They were acting pretty stupid. Wonder what they told their parents--"we're going to do a little shopping in Cozumel, mom, be back soon!"
All of our children had a notation on the KTTW cards that said "NA", I think, meaning no alcohol.

When my teens were 18 I let them drink in the ports that allowed it. It is legal in those ports so I let them....they were fine and I am sure it was nothing new to them. I don't live in a bubble and I know drinking goes on with under 21 year olds.

Did not let them drink on the ship.
