Dress Code Question

Sorry if this post is in the wrong section (couldn't find an area that seemed to cover it), but we have a question regarding dress code at the WDW parks.

I've found the WDW dress code, which reads:

Examples of unacceptable attire includes:

  • Clothing displaying offensive messages/language
  • Adult costumes or clothing that can be viewed as a costume (children under age 10 are excluded)
  • Clothing made with offensive material, (ie transparent)
  • Clothing that is excessively torn
  • Clothing which exposes inappropriate portions of the body such as string bikini tops, G-strings, bikini bottoms, etc.
  • Guests wearing wedding attire are discouraged from entering the Theme Parks.

Our eldest daughter is a fan of the tv show Sons of Anarchy and has zip-up hoodie with one of the logos on the back. If you've ever seen the show, you'll know that the logo is a grim reaper holding an automatic weapon. It is, however, a hugely popular program and it's merchandise is widely available. I've seen many t-shirts from various rock bands that I think could be deemed equally or perhaps even more offensive, but such things are obviously in the eye of the beholder.

Our questions are: does anyone think there's a chance that if she wore it she might be in violation of the dress code? Do you think she'd be stopped at the gate and not be allowed to wear it in? Has anyone seen any SOA merchandise being worn on at any of the parks or resorts?

Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but it's her favourite hoodie and her teenage grumpiness comes out strong every we time suggest that she might want to leave it behind. Perhaps we're just being unnecessarily overly cautious?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I don't think it is appropriate attire for a Disney park. And it is possible she will not be allowed to wear it in the parks.

Is she old enough that she is refused entry she could take it back to the hotel alone? If not I would put my foot down and not allow her to wear it to the parks.

I've never seen anything like that at Disney. I'd use your common sense and assume that isn't appropriate for any theme park, especially on where there are lots of small children. I'd leave it at home.

I think, in general, if you have to ask you probably already know the answer.

I would suggest your daughter choose another hoodie for the trip. ( I also think it could make some of the other people on the plane, unfamiliar with the show as I am, a bit uncomfortable. I think Disney security might be far less an issue than airport security.)

Have a great time!

Yes this. I don't think WDW is the place to wear a reaper hoodie and I think is very nice of you to be concerned about possibly offending other people. A rarity these days :)

I am a huge fan of SOA and would not feel comfortable wearing any of shirts etc. anywhere (but I'm a mom of 3, not a teenager ;)

Maybe a Jack Skellington hoodie could replace her SOA hoodie for the trip?

Great point about the airplane. People have been told to change clothes for less offensive clothing. I can't imagine a shirt with a skeleton and a gun will go over very well when fying.:scared:

Sorry, but I think that would be inappropriate for a family amusement park with lots of little kids around. I go to WDW 4-6vtimes a year and have never seen anything like that in the parks. If you do bring it, be prepared that security might turn her away and even if they let her in, if another guest was to complain and bring it to another CM's attention, there could be a good chance she might be asked to remove it later.

I don't remember what was on it, but remember a few years ago a young man around 16 or 17 y/o being told his shirt was inappropriate and that he was going to have to either change it or turn it wrong side out. His family was right in front of me in the bag check line. He and his parents started arguing about it and the CM just said, 'this is a family park with impressionable young kids and that shirt is not appropriate'. He took the shirt off and turned it wrong side out.:rotfl:

My husband and I are fans of the show, however I don't think it would be thoughtful of others to wear a SOA hoodie to the Parks. Some children are frightened easier than others.

My BIL (a teenager) bought my son a SOA reaper onesie for his first birthday. Eek! I only put it on him at home.

Thanks for the feedback all. Helpful thought about the airport, too. We're not frequent flyers, so that one didn't occur to us.

Deep down we thought as much, so I'm glad our gut feelings were right. :)

i honestly wouldnt even notice and couldnt even begin to tell you how many times ive noticed what someone else is wearing. thats just odd.. i really doubt she would get called out on it.

second thought, after googling the hoodie, it looks like a motorcycle gang logo. i wouldnt wear it.

Why would anyone care what you wear when you're cooking ;)

Seriously, I fly quite frequently and I can't imagine TSA or any airline employee stopping anyone from wearing SOA clothing. That is a non-issue.

I agree. No one will care while you're flying. I think that the t-shirt is borderline for park wear and she *may* be asked to turn it inside out especially at the MK. I'm not offended by it, bu it does cause me to  and think "Teenagers!".

Not so long ago a passenger was told to change when he had on a tee shirt that referenced The Princess Bride. All it takes is one skittish FA or fellow passenger.

A teenage girl wearing that on an airplane would scare you? Seriously?

And remember, those same teenage girls go through security. And if one of them jokes about blowing up a plane, she's in some serious trouble. So who is wearing the hoodie isn't the issue. If it would be a problem on an adult male, then it's likely to be an issue on an 18 year old girl.

I understand that the hoodie is related to a TV show and doesn't imply any intent to do anything. But not everyone else knows the show,-- I was totally unaware until I saw this thread-- and would realize that it's harmless.

I have a number of friends who haven't flown since we lost a student on TWA flight 800. They went to several funerals after 9/11. I can see how they might be particularly skittish about seeing someone in such a hoodie. Not "afraid" per se, but skittish.

All Hoodies have to be taken off at security as it is an outergarment and all outergarments must be removed.
