FYI: Rule 240 of passenger rights laws dictates that passengers on flights delayed over 4.5-5 hours are owed meal vouchers worth $10 per passenger. They are not offered unless requested. We asked for them in Charlotte, no questions asked. However, the rep we talked to said that this rule will soon be inactivated. I'm not sure when.

I am happy for you that you flew early, and even though 12 hours in an airport is torture, its better than missing the boat. Plus from your pictures it looks like everybody made the best of it.

As I understand it, Rule 240 actually does not exist anymore. That is the rule designation from before airline deregulation but it is still referred to as Rule 240. Airlines most still compensate for mechanical problems but not weather or acts of god, and that is unlikely to change at any time. Thus airlines will do whatever they can to blame problems on weather rather than their own scheduling or mechanical problems.
