Trying a cruise for the 1st time
4 nights sounds good - NYC to Canada and back to NYC
Anyone try it ?
Is is in the fall - cooler weather
Maybe our ski jackets
So is paying for an outside water view worth it ?
Are the inside rooms with the fake round window feel like a closet ?

1st time cruisers
please advice

I just did the 7 Night New England/Canada cruise earlier this month and choose to get a cabin with a balcony. I felt it was worth it in the event that any of us got sick and were confined to our cabin at least we would have some fresh air.

I'm on that cruise next year with a friend and we're staying in an inside room. The room is accessible because I have balance problems and can't use a tub without a lot of hand bars or I fall. Our room will be a little bigger than the regular inside room. I would stay in an inside even if I didn't need an accessible room. I'm afraid of heights so a veranda cabin would be wasted on me. Ocean view with a porthole would be good. It was a little out of our budget because NYC is so expensive to stay in the night before the cruise. This is something a lot of people on this board recommend doing is staying at a hotel the night before your cruise because the ship won't wait for you if you get in late on a morning flight the same day as the cruise.

There are a lot of good hotels near Times Square and the theater district. A little pricey but it is NYC. My friend and I are planning on staying at a Hampton Inn called Hampton Inn Manhattan Times Square Central. Free breakfast, free wifi and some nice restaurants around. Just down the street from the hotel is Tony's Di Napoli Times Square. It's an Italian restaurant. It has family style serving and good reviews. We plan on going there the night before for dinner. The hotel is about 1 or 2 blocks from Times Square.

This will be my friend and my first cruise too. My friend is from Texas and I'm from Massachusetts and I'm telling her what to pack for northeastern fall weather. I told her because she will get cold to pack a lighter hoodie if it's unseasonably warm and a heavier hoodie for cool days. Also I told her to pack a fleece jacket which I think she'll be wearing to NYC and on the sea days. I told her to pack layers. Some jeans or warm pants along with warmer weather pants. Some short and long sleeved shirts. A cardigan for the dining room. People also say it can happen but it's rare, a warm hat, scarf and gloves. I'm bringing a ball cap to wear around the port. The sun hates me and makes me sick. Thus the cooler weather cruise. I have a big brimmed hat with a cinch underneath the chin for when I'm on the deck.

I burn terribly and everyone says bring sunblock. So I'm packing a lot of it. I reccommend packing some. Bring over the counter medications like Ibuprofen or Tylenol, some stomach medication like tums, Pepto-Bismol, Imodium. Sea sickness medication like Bonine or Dramamine. You can also take ginger capsules, use motion eaze oil behind the earlobes(On amazon.com) and seabands(accupressure bands for your wrists). Cough medicine, cold medicine, and allergy pills. It costs a pretty penny on the ship and they might not have the brand you like.

This isn't necessary but I'm bringing Disney character T-shirts and long sleeve t-shirts to wear under them with matching Minnie ears. I'm getting my friend some too. We'll probably be the only adults with them on but this is probably a one time thing for both of us so we're going to live it up. We both love dressing up so we have pirate night costumes and Halloween costumes. I'm being Fairy Godmother. My friend hasn't told me yet what she's being but knowing her it will be a great costume. I'm bringing 1 dress and a couple skirts and nice tops to wear to dinner. I told my friend she could wear anything she wanted to. I just want to dress up because I never get a chance to.

Comfortable shoes that are worn in. Lots of walking on the ship and in port. I'll let someone else tell you what they bring. This post is getting too long. ☺️Have a great time on the cruise. Maybe my friend and I will see you if we bump into each other. :smickey:

My first cruise was Canada from NYC so I'm a bit biased but I think it's a great choice.

I doubt you'll need ski jackets, but I guess it depends on your tolerance for cold. My son swam on our trip and was one of the few people in the water but was fine. We've been in the 60's here in NY (actually 70+) yesterday so it'll depend on exact time of year, too. Basically...layers is what I'd suggest. We did leave NY (going south, though) during freezing rain once.

I've only done porthole rooms (because I've only ever been on the classic ships which don't have the magic porthole) but if I were going to try an inside room, I feel like this is the cruise I'd try it on. It's short enough. Plus, we spend very little time in our room, mostly just a place to sleep, shower, and change, other than that, we're out and about.

Our last cruise we got upgraded to a balcony room and while it was nice to have, it confirmed that I'm too cheap to actually pay for one!!
