Dr. Jones and the Spitting Camel - Link to Alaska Cruise TR 9/18

Bored! :faint: Maybe if he'd get out of bed and stop hangin' with the grands he wouldn't be... Kids are funny. It must be hard to try to keep all the TS credits straight when someone is playing right. :goodvibes Love the brownie photo:rotfl2:

Holy cow what a morning!!!!

I did that walk from DHS all the way to Epcot and you know... It was not that bad. I was waiting at DHS for a boat and finally gave up and of course as I get to the pathentrance, I see it approach. I made it to EPCOT a few minutes before the boat did.

If it wasn't too hot out, I think it would be a lovely walk to go the whole way! Or a nice run...if I were a runner. LOL!

I can only imagine you reading that text and the frantic text back about the credits. I can only hope that their late arrival on the first day saved a couple of credits.
It did save 2 credits (though selfishly we'd hoped to use them for Evan who was OOP) but they used 4.

So glad you could make the time to cool off ( somewhat literally) and eat so you could deal with those who choose to rewrite the plans.

The walk, the icy cold beer and delicious lunch worked wonders. We were like....whatever!

A little (o.k. o.k. a lot) late but subscribing none the less. :cool1:

Hi and :welcome:

happy to have you here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ouch. Sorry to read that your well-thought-out plans for using the dining credits were being dashed. And that Taylor had some "must-do's" that had gone unvoiced up until now. I'm afraid I'd have trouble working up any sympathy for someone who was bored, but didn't get up until noon.

Yeah, we didn't have a lot of sympathy for him either. He regressed into 12 year old mode around grandma, it was bizarre!

At least it sounds like you were able to get some things done at DHS. Where's the general vicinity of the Writer's Stop?

It's right at the start of the Streets of America and really easy to miss as it's a tiny corner shop with small signage.

I love that you started your morning at the Writer's Stop. We must try that front nook this summer! Well, that you went there after waiting forever for a boat.

It's funny as the nook isn't exactly comfy seating but it's fun people watching! there are comfier seats in the back though in general not a ton of seating at all. It was the right spot to go to for sure, started our day out right!

Sounds like you managed quite a few rides that morning at DHS, but what a bummer that the other four used dining credits for lunch. :headache:
We actually got a TON done. We left feeling like, for the most part, we'd really done all we wanted to at DHS that trip which is always a really good feeling.

The other 4, not so much but, their choice I guess. Sandie and Paul had some pricey tickets that hadn't seen all that much use yet and it was unlikely that DHS would fit into the schedule again, and K&T had only had maybe 3 hours at DHS from earlier in the trip. Of course we didn't know at that time that Taylor was busy whining to grandma about how he'd "been there done that" on everything and all he REALLY wanted was the Rainforest Cafe. GRR.

I love, love, love the pictures of the four of you on the Boardwalk. So cute! I had to laugh over the picture of Eric with brownie all over his face. Connor sometimes looks like that, too, after eating chocolate of any sort. They do eventually outgrow that, right? :lmao:
Thanks! Those are probably my favorite pictures of the trip :goodvibes

Eric ALWAYS looks like that. And the amazing thing is he can wipe is face and 2 hours later, the ring re-appears...at 10 he still drools I guess. It's funny but....????

I vote for throwing Taylor in Crescent Lake. Well, maybe not, but it is infuriating when kids decide to try and get the sympathy vote from the grandparents by playing the "Oh, woe is me!" card. :sad2:

Nah, we felt like throwing him in the lake at that moment. Usually it's Kendall or Evan but Taylor won on this trip. I think both of us forgot, as they don't see Sandie much, how both K&T will play that card with her and it really took us by surprise.

Oh my! I would have had a meltdown over the dining credits! Oy!! Not sure if they just didn't listen and/or didn't appreciate how precisely everything is planned out and accounted for. But either way, how inconsiderate!

I honestly don't think they got it. Despite all the explaining, I don't think they really understood they why, or what they'd done. In all fairness, I also don't think they were trying to be inconsiderate, they were hungry, we weren't there, so they should eat. That's about the extent of the thinking that went on. Did they factor us in? No. But then again, we did ditch them for the park so...whatever.

I LOVE the walk b/w DHS and Boardwalk/Beach Club. So much so, in fact, that I'm not sure I've ever been on the bus. Sometimes I do that loop "speedwalking" in the morning for exercise. Sure wish I could roll out of bed and do that this morning!!
I've never taken the bus to DHS from BC, just the boat and the walk. I think I will speedwalk the loop while Mary Ellen runs. Or run when she's not looking. LOL.

Sure looks hot. Can see the steam in some of your shots!

I'd never really considered BB for a lunch option... those sandwiches all sound good. May have to try it out sometime!

It was very steamy, you can definitely see it in the pictures.

Yikes! I can't believe they used their TS credits for lunch!! :scared1::scared1:

Short sighted decisions that throw off all of the well thought out plans are what really drives me crazy about being at Disney with a big group! I totally feel your pain!

I think what frustrated me more was that they knew we had a breakfast booked for the last day, and another ressie as a group possibility and they just couldn't wait. They of course, really only meaning Sandie. K&T were all too eager to just jump on board and I do think Sandie found herself in an awkward spot with Paul with him being a bit demanding about the whole breakfast thing and I'm not sure she saw that coming. TS credits for lunch, unless you are on the deluxe plan, just never seems to pencil. But the good news is it was all of their credits, thankfully K&T only had their park tickets, not the room key with the dining plan on it. WHEW!

I'm really annoyed for you! More so at the grandparents then the kids. Why did it never occur to Paul to mention his breakfast thing if it's such a must do for him everyday. :confused3

Who knows. Maybe he assumed Sandie knew and would arrange it? More likely, he's just used to traveling with just the 2 of them and winging it. she may, or may not, have really explained the dining plan to him and how things were planned out. I'm guessing that he just went into his vacation with certain expectations based on other vacations and assumed he could do whatever he wanted. Which, I have to admit, is how most people do their vacations. And given that they were there, and we were not, I can easily see how it just happened. Short of hog tying them, or dragging them with us, or skipping that morning park time ourselves, it was really unavoidable looking back.

The tough part for us was what felt a little two faced on the parts of the kids. They had a great time with us those first 4 days in the parks. nary a complaint and lots of laughs and fun. The minute the grandparents showed up it's "I'm bored", "I want to do this( and my parents aren't making it happen)" aka pool time instead of park, sleeping in, rainforest. We'd expected some of that from Kendall, and frankly expected Sandie to pounce on it with Kendall to get "alone" time with her but Taylor pulling it was really out of left field. All of a sudden he was saying he just wanted to get to Universal as that was new and he was excited for that. Huh. First time he'd mentioned that either!

Ughhhhhhh! I could feel your frustration over the whole breakfast/lunch/TS thing! You just spent HOW LONG planning and making ADRs to have them waste the credits. :headache: Really, okay, they want food - I get it - if they had just asked what to do instead!!! Arg.

Honestly, we should have had the conversation the night before. I'd, of course, forgotten about the Paul/breakfast thing and our kids often won't eat till noon so we'd assumed an early lunch meeting since there was breakfast snack stuff right there in the room. And we had mentioned that they could get CS stuff from the lobby, which would have worked perfectly without using the credits. I did know that BCM was too far away for them to find at that point so didn't really mention it.

Aside from that, sounds like a very nice morning! I love all your "waiting for the boat" pictures and cannot wait to be there in 6 days. :hyper: And your PP pictures at the Beach Club are beautiful! I am going to keep an eye out for one in that area and request that same shot with the BW in the background. :cloud9:

Sorry to hear about Taylor and his whining - I laughed out loud about throwing him in Cresent Lake though. :rolleyes1 ;)

I am SO jealous!!!!!!!!!! If you have to wait for a boat, I can't think of a better spot to do it. Those are my favorite pictures from the trip :goodvibes

Yeah, Taylor deserved a dunk, no doubt!

Wow Wow Wow! :sad2:

Well...the positive turn of this post is the fabulous PP pictures, the lovely walk from DHS, the drifters and the proposition of throwing Taylor in Crescent Lake!
Drama aside, we really did have a great morning and I think you can see that in the pictures. We almost didn't want to hook up with them at that point!

Sorry that all of your planning seems to be going awry this am. I might have thrown myself in Crescent Lake :rotfl:

Tracy

LOL. Well, it figures. We'd really stuck to the plans the 4 solo days before they got there, 5 days really since they got in so late, so it was bound to go off track at some point.

I'm glad we have never had to deal with Dining credits - I can just imagine how they would be wasted by my crew. And as a mother of 3 teen-age boys (well the 2 oldest are 20 & 21 but still verry teenager-ish!) I can totally sympathize with throwing Taylor in the lake! And a well-intentioned grandmother can cause sooooo much trouble. My mother and my oldest son have a good bond - which was nice when he was little But the older he got the more often he would go to grandma when he didn't get the responses he wanted at home. I tried to explain to my mother that she had her opportunity to raise her kids and she should let me raise mine. But she doesn't think she is doing anything wrong. maybe not - but it has definitely strained the relationships between us and our oldest boy and us and her. :headache:

Well, on the flip side, the dining credits can save quite a bit of money, so if you can control them, it works out great. Sandie just flat out didn't get it. She actually handled Taylor quite well. She ratted him out but didn't promise him a darn thing, basically just listened.

Wow. Just wow. I think between the teeange angst and the grandparents, I'd be ready to tell them all to have fun on their own.

That's why no more whole family trips for us. I just can't do them anymore.

There is a reason there are only 4 of us on the Alaska Cruise.

:rotfl:

Honestly, for the most part, it was fine. We had some highs and lows but at the end of the day, very glad we did it. It was far harder on Jeff than me as he was torn. Their being there gave K&T an excuse to opt out, but at the same time he really wanted his mom to be able to have some quality time with K&T. So, we didn't push it as there were other benefits to how things played out, even if it wasn't really in our favor at the moment.

I swear I see the early morning haze of a hot day in your first photo there.

You do!

but love that you can spend some time with just the E's in the morning and split up into smaller groups. :thumbsup2

It was fun. We ended up spending a lot of the trip split up and it's funny, as in a way I feel like everyone had a very different vacation from the others as a result. About the only ones that had exactly the same trip would be the E's. :rotfl:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE:cool1::cool1:the brownie face! toofunny!

and yeah, I can get ignoring a few texts.:rolleyes1 I remember having to just manage one extra person with the dining plan issue....can't even imagine having to manage a whole gang of extras.
Bet that beer tasted especially good!!:dance3:

Isn't that picture a riot?

The good news is that the damage was done at that point and they did "get it" on a go forward basis. We strategized about how to redeploy the credits to minimize the loss and figured that they'd be best off paying OOP at Kouzzina.

quite the eventful morning.

i can see my in laws doing something like that.

too bad he didnt tell you ahead of time what his wishes were for the trip.

was TSM scheduled to be done for maintanence?

Yes, TSM was scheduled to be down. It's why the boys and I went solo earlier in the trip and got 3 rides in! Taylor had only gotten one as he'd elected to sleep in while K&Jeff worked out and really wanted another one.

Oh well!

Yeah, I can see any of our parents doing that, it really shouldn't have surprised or annoyed us. I think Sandie was taking advantage of the solo K&T time as well. Which I get. And hey, we ended up with a great lunch and wonderful pictures so it's all good.

:thumbsup2 LOVE the family pic. You look terrific and great shirt. :goodvibes

Thanks! I love those pics, probably my favorites from the trip.

Using accounted for credits? :faint: Who are these people? :rotfl2:

Normal people. Aka non Disers who don't get it. Really, they should have not done the DDP and then it would have been better for them financially I think. I haven't crunched their numbers to see if they came out ahead or not. We did, even with this, and upcoming, fiascos.

It looks warm and muggy in the photos.
It was!!!!!!!!!!!! The rain actually helped quite a bit, it was about perfect out during those photos.

:thumbsup2 then :surfweb: then :cloud9: then :lmao: then :scared1: then  then  then :lmao: then  then :sad2: then popcorn::

:rotfl::rotfl:

that about sums it up.

I vote for throwing Taylor in the lake! Paaaaleeezzzzzeeeeee! Bored! I know for sure that he and Brian would be fast friends because they are cut from the same mold. Teens! OMG!!!!!
Seriously. We'd expected it from Kendall but no, it was Taylor. Threw us for a loop.

I love your PP pictures of the 4 of you. They turned out great. :thumbsup2

Thanks! Some of my favorite shots from the trip for sure

I don't blame you for being upset about the TS credits. Total waste. But you can't be there every second, can you?
No, you can't, and they are big people so would just have to live with the consequences. LOL!

Fun morning at HS. I love that pathway between HS and the boardwalk. I am totally up for walking (unless its a bagillion degrees at 1pm). I plan to run there in the mornings.
It was! You can see that I went bagless again by the lack of photos of much of the day, apparently I was too lazy (or hot) to get the camera out of Jeff's daypack. Or not in the mood for him to make fun of me taking pictures of everything.

I'm going to try to head out with you when you do that. I may, or may not run though. Probably not as you'd get it done in twice my time I'm sure!

Bored! :faint: Maybe if he'd get out of bed and stop hangin' with the grands he wouldn't be... Kids are funny. It must be hard to try to keep all the TS credits straight when someone is playing right. :goodvibes Love the brownie photo:rotfl2:

Seriously. He missed out on RRC for what. To sleep and eat a burger? Have quality grandparent time when he likely just laid around and didn't even speak?

I do think he was frustrated to not have his guitar in the down times and there wasn't anywhere he could skate and get some energy out which would be his normal activities so that part was probably a little hard on him.
:rotfl:

Very late to the party, but finally caught up. We leave shortly for the Boardwalk, so your report is helping me get through these last few weeks. Sorry about the problems with T & K and MIL. I hope things get better. Luckily none of your credits were wasted.

We did a 12 person family trip in Dec of 10. My sister and her family ended up blowing up all but one of our ADRs. Since we were not on the dining plan it did not hurt, but I was embarassed when we kept showing up sort of people and I went to a lot or trouble to make them. You just have to let it go and have a good trip on your own,

Can't wait to read more! Thanks for sharing!

Writer's Stop is the PERFECT place to start a DHS morning; caffeine and pastries. :cloud9:

I am so sorry that the DDP credits were used. :sad2:
Traveling with a group can be so much fun, but it does involve some stress. I'm happy some cold drinks and lunch helped the situation.

Hi and :welcome:!!! The Boardwalk will be lovely, I'd love to be heading there right now!

Oh it was fine really, annoying of course but not entirely unexpected and it didn't slow us down, they got what they wanted, so....really it all worked out.

I did a 20 person trip back in '04. I think that helped us roll with whatever happened on this trip. You can't control everyone else, only your reactions to it and that's what we just reminded ourselves every now and then. Using the credits only (potentially) hurt them, but at least they did have 2 credits to kind of burn anyways or it could have been a lot worse. And, things happen for a reason, it really did all work out.

Coffee and pastries are key to a good morning!!! It was a great first stop.

Ah well, I can see how it happened, it's like they thought the DDP was an all inclusive plan or something. I should have just left them out of the DDP entirely and it would have avoided it. We probably made a bigger deal about it than was warranted, we were just freaked out at the time that we'd be at dinner later in the week, they'd be out of credits and somehow we'd be to blame. They had a hard time understanding the difference between the CS and TS credits and so of course, this meant not only did they use up TS ones when they shouldn't, they now had 4 extra CS ones!

The DDP can be confusing. Even some of the CMs were confused when we tried to use credits last summer. :rotfl:

While I love idea of prepaying food, I also think sometimes it's easier to just not use the plan. Right now, we have no intention of adding the plan to our summer trip and will just use TiW.

What did your boys think of the kids options at the CS places? I thought some of the kids meals at the CS places are ick and lack variety. Peanut butter jelly uncrustables, while good, is just not what my nephews eat. They prefer salmon and mahi mahi.

I am going to definitely have this problem with my 8 year old. He's almost nine and has the tastes of an adult. He would MUCH rather steak than a cheeseburger or mac n cheese.

TiW is a great option, if you have it! Not an option for us but if it were I could absolutely see going that route. I actually love the DDP as it lets our kids really order whatever they want without us having heart attacks that it's too expensive and they won't eat it all, it lets them feel spoiled rotten and us not stress about the $$.

Honestly we tend to steer towards CS places that don't have official kids menu's for that reason, it opens up their options. In some cases, we asked if they had to get a kids meal (But I think that was only in 09) but honestly, I don't know that outside of the kids burger in the sand pail at TL and HH, we got a single kids meal, Eric would just get a regular CS meal. He had schwarma in Morrocco, the tuna sandwhich at CHH, a Caprese from the Boardwalk Bakery...and I don't recall what else but I also don't recall it ever being an issue. As he was 9, but a tall 9, I think they assumed he was an "adult" DDP'er anyway!

But, if you plan appropriately you can avoid those kids CS options, we did that in 09 as that is not what my kids eat either.

Look at the CS and TS menu's online (I like the allears set up the best). It definitely has influenced where we've eaten for both TS and CS to try to give the kids the flexibility they need. We've had really good luck thanks to some extra planning.

If you were Mike, you' d have thrown in a shoulder shrug as well. :lmao:

cynthia, are you getting any snow?

There's a shoulder shrug smilie? I wanna see!

Dusting so far but we are supposed to get some. I really hope so to tell you the truth. I want a foot and the entire city shut down. :rotfl:

Seriously though. Some nice snow would go a long ways towards entertaining the kids during this mid winter break where everyone they know went somewhere warm and we are here doing....nothing.

Like true sledding, enough to build a snowman snow! It's possible....fingers crossed big time.

I agree with you about ordering on the DDP. You don't have the sticker shock when it comes to prices.
We got the TiW card last year and will make good use of it this summer. We did the deluxe dining plan last August and could not use all of the snack credits and we got whatever we wanted! Appetizer, entree, and dessert was just too much at some of the meals. For character meals it was great, but it was a waste of money everywhere else.

Good idea about looking over the CS menus as I usually just focus on the TS ones. That's exactly what I'm going to do this week! I have to start gathering menus and listing places where the boys will find something to eat.

Have you tried House of Blues or Bongos?

Joining in! I found your TR the other day and have spent the last few days catching up. I'm hooked...can't wait to read more! :wizard:

HOB for lunch once. We really liked it. It was OOP. Kids split a pizza, Taylor had wings, I had a really great salad and no clue what Jeff got. I'd go there again for sure.

I'd looked at Bongo's but the reviews were so bad, we steered away from it.

There are actually a lot of places that don't have kid specific meals if you avoid the resort quick service spots lol!

Better kids TS meals off the top of my head are any of the buffets, Teppan Edo, Raglan, Kona, WCC, Tutto. While not a ton of options, there is at least one non pizza/burger/mac and cheese option on all of those.

Deluxe is a crazy amount of food, especially with kids. I love that DVC now lets you do it for just part of your stay, that way you can spread it out and really maximize the savings. We are going to do it for 2 of our nights in May, it will cover 3 days of food! :cool1:

Just read your whole report!! Really enjoying it. Can't wait for more.

We have ADRs for HOB. We're looking forward to that.
I also made an ADR for Bongo's, but not sure I'm going to keep it. I love Cuban food, but not sure how authenic it will be at Bongo's. We love Mexican and we hated San Angel Inn. I ordered the same dish I get at Mama Mexico in NYC and it was ruined at San Angel.

WCC and Kona are great! Love those places. I want to try Teppan Edo, Tutto, and Raglan. I may need to tweak ADRs a bit.

Deluxe was way too much food. My nephews (7 and the little one will be 3 in June) never finish a meal. I usually split an entree with my mother or SIL.
And we are not dessert immediately after dinner people. We prefer to have our dessert an hour or so after eating.

I love that DVC changed how the dining plan can be added too! 2 nights to use over 3 days sounds PERFECT! How long is your May trip? I hope you take lots of photos. I would LOVE to go during F & G, but I have to teach and it's a busy time of year for us. Even if I didn't have to teach, I have such terrible allergies that I'd spend the majority of the trip in a Benadryl coma. My doctor is trying to convince me to move to Arizona so my allergies won't be so bad. Why couldn't he say move to FL?

Seriously. We'd expected it from Kendall but no, it was Taylor. Threw us for a loop.

New resort suggestion: Skate ramp with boards to rent! :cool1: On 2nd thought can you imagine the insurance on that one? :rotfl2:
