We're considering the Hilton or the Doubletree for our first trip to WDW! We live in Southern California so we're regulars to DL. When I first started planning I was overwhelmed with all the choices! We have 3 boys ages 7,8, and 12 and will be staying in a suite. I've noticed that these resorts are on property but not run by Disney. Husband kinda likes that idea. Thinks he'll be OD'ed on Disney after 6 days! LOL! Any thoughts are appreciated!! Thanks!

Oh yeah, we're going June 17-22

We stayed at one of the DD resorts.....I highly recommend that you stay with Disney. There are plenty of resorts that will feel relaxing while there and Disney just knows how to take care of you better. We also grew up in So Cal, so I can imagine your hesitation, but trust me, you want to stay with Disney.

Id' probably avoid the values, because they are big on theming and could provoke a "Here we go" response by DH. I really recommend that WL for your boys. Its fantastic. Loads of fun. For peace and quiet, OKW is a home away from Home resort and its definately the calm away from the chaos. So is SSR, though a bit less so. The Yacht and Beach Club have the best pool on property and a great location.

Stay with Disney.

Okay, could you please let me in on what all those abbreviations stand for? LOL! I'm not quite familiar with all the Disney lingo yet! ;) Thanks!

WL is Wilderness Lodge
OKW is Old Key West
SSR is Saratoga Springs Resort

I would reccomend staying on property also. There are plenty of Disney resorts that dont throw disney down your throat. Maybe try Swan and Dolphin, not "owned by Disney" but still have Disney bus service and great location!

Sorry! NDA got most of them: WL=Wilderness Lodge (VWL or WLV are the villas there); OKW is Old Key West; SSR is Saratoga Sprongs Resort; DH is darling (or dumb as the mood strikes you) husband; DD is Downtown Disney.

Hi,
I agree with those that say stay in a disney resort, but if you do decide to go with a DD disney hotel, keep in mind that only the Hilton offers EMH (Extra Magic Hour), where you can gain entrance into the parks either an hour early or stay 2-3 hours later after park closing. Differs from day to day which parks offer this.
Have fun planning !

After checking out prices on one and two bedroom suites at "on property" (I thought DD was "on property"??) I'm thinking we'll stick with the locations we've selected. For the price and proximity, I just don't think it can be beat. I do value your opinions and help though!! Thanks alot for the tips and insight! I'm sure I'll be asking tons more questions. DL does not even come close to comparing with DW!! LOL! Soooo much more to do and see! I'm hoping I've allowed us enough time!

(I thought DD was "on property"??)
Hi Fungirl,
The DD hotels are on disney property but not considered disney-owned themselves and they are not eligible for disney resort perks such as : EMH, ME (Magical Express), package pickup, DDP (disney dining plan). Also, the complimentary disney busses to the parks, from what I've heard, don't run quite as frequently as the disney-owned resort busses do.
I think these are some of the reasons some of us were suggesting staying at a disney resort. But you know your family and their needs best. Stop back any time if you have any other questions :thumbsup2

Maria, thank you so much for your insight and opinion!! I really do appreciate it!! I'll be checking back in for much more info, I'm sure!! ;)

Definately the perks about staying on the park is the transportation!!!! The buses, monorails, and boats bring you basically gate to gate and hotel to gate anywhere you want to go! They run all the time and are fantastic!!! They are safe you don't have to worry about parking a car or losing your car in a HUGE parking lot!!!! It is so easy to park hop with the free transportation!!!

Question about the transportation. I have stayed on Disney the last 2 yrs and used the transportation....If you stay off and drive in and park go to MK and decide to go to MGM can you still use the transportation system?:confused3

Yes, 5boyz........you can hop on a bus just outside the MK gates, marked going to MGM. During the middle of the day though, these park to park busses could run every 20-25 min. In the morning and evening they should run more frequently. You could also take the monorail over to the Contemp or Poly and catch a bus to MGM there.
This has been a heated debate on many threads, but I've never seen any policy that states anyone holding a MYW pass or AP and stays offsite cannot use disney transportation.

Thanks Mia!!! I know the last 2 years I was never asked for any kind of proof that I was staying on property (even though I was). Also my 2 teenage boys were coming and going all the time without us, they were never bothered so I was just wondering!!!:)

I have stayed at both Doubletree Suites and Hilton at Downtown Disney. We did not use their transportation at either. We enjoyed both locations. If you look at a map of Downtown Disney you will see those hotels have their own road from one end of DTD on out to the exit off property. To compare:

Doubletree Suites (Jan 06):
Is the farthest hotel from DTD. Not a bad walk but a jaunt.
It is an all suite hotel.
Hot and Cold Breakfast buffets available. We stayed via a Mousesaver link and got the cold for free and it was one of the best we have had.
Pool is average, is by the highway and alittle noisy for me.
I would request a room facing DTD so I didn't look at the highway.
Everyone was very nice, the actual common areas are small.
Suite had all we needed and they brought us an extra chair as we are five.
Renovated a couple years ago, so our room was very nice.
Not a hotel I would hang around in beyond my room, but would certainly return for home base.

Hilton (Sept 06 x2):
Literally a crosswalk away for DTD. Was great to go back and forth.
Variety of room offerings here, we had 2 regular rooms so I can't tell you about a suite.
Room one faced the pool area but we could see parts of DTD. Room two faced the front and we watched the MK fireworks from our room.
Pools are very nice, with padded chaise, tables, hot tub, two pools etc.
Lobby very large, with bar, pool table, sitting areas.......several restaurants.
Have the EMH at the parks, character meal there and variety of food offers.
We did have an executive level room with access to the executive lounge. Ate breakfast there along with snacks. Never made it for the evening food so I'm not sure what was offered.
Room looked like it had been renovated....granite in bath etc....but could have used alittle more detail. Still a very nice room.
Again I would return in heart beat, especially if I were using the pool area.

I recently read on one of the disney web pages that the transportation is available to anyone purchasing Park Hopper tickets, regardless if you're staying on property or not. I was concerned about this as we are NOT staying on property this year, we're renting a Villa.

Funny-I don't get to post much but I just answered another post about the Hilton. We stayed there a few years ago and the new suites would be a consideration for us in the future. Location was great-a quick walk to DTD. We used the hotel buses as well as the DTD bus. Pool was very nice and remained open late which was a big plus for us because we closed down the parks every night........:wizard:

We stayed at Hilton DTD over Christmas, we were there for 3 nights, we most likely woudl not have stayed there but i happen to win a bid for them on priceline for only $60 a night, WOW< CAN YOU SAY WOWOWOWOW! Itwas listed as $130 on there web site for those nights!

It was very nice, clean refreshing room, large enought that me DH and 2 kids did not feel cramped beds were very comfy, but if i had not had the discount, i would not have chosen this Hotel. My first choice would be a ONsite rpoperty just for the Magical feel. you willnot be ODed on Disney,

HAPPY PLANNING!

Transportation is included, but you need to get to it. For example, the hotels in question in the Downtown Disney area are close to Downtown Disney, but the Downtown Disney buses don't bring you to the theme parks.

There is also a gray area surrounding using transportation at the Disney resorts by off-site guests. If you're eating at the resort, or even touring or shopping, it's fine, but if you're trying to avoid paying the parking fee or avoid your own hotel shuttles by using this transportation, it's questionable to some.

You can transfer around using Disney transportation, but you have to get to the TTC or a park first.
